1978's Steely Dan's "Greatest Hits" (AK 1107/2) is a neglected treasure. Here's why. When first released it was dismissed as unnecessary. For one thing fans already had the original albums and most thought there was little if any reason to repurchase the same music and that ABC had put four tunes on two sides and five tunes on two sides for a total of eighteen, with no unreleased bonus material, so who needed it other than those that did not have the originals. So, here is the long-neglected "greatest hits" album. Realizing that the original tapes that more than likely no longer exist for most if not all of the early Steely Dan music that did exist in 1978. Its my understanding a number of their originals tapes were lost. (stolen, misplaced, Maybe). Thus is the SD tape legacy. I had forgotten that since Fagen was a sound perfectionist it wasn't that all surprising that the reissue was engineered by Elliot Scheiner at Automated Sound Studios in New York and right below that credit it read 'Mastered by Robert Ludwig' at Masterdisk Corp., New York. Top shelf. I played the two disc's and the sound is uniformly superb. Whatever the source tape and however it was assembled the sonics are dynamic, wide-band and the music just plain erupts from the grooves.
