  • Item: Lot of four (4) 7" inch EP records with covers or sleeves as pictured above, all by Ludmila Lopato. She was probably the most famous gypsy music singer in Paris as she owned the Pavillon Russe and performed there. The musicians she worked with were important too since at least one of them had also worked with Django Reinhardt. From the net: “Lopato was born in 1914, in the family of a Russian tobacco magna in Harbin, the most Russian of the Chinese cities. In 1929 his family left Manchuria for Paris, where Ludmila studied singing at the Russian conservatory Rachmaninov. As she approached the war, she left Europe for North America, on the same ship she took, were Ingrid Bergman and Albert Einstein, escaping from fascism. She has sung in cabarets in North America as well as in Paris. The critics called it "champagne in the snow with paprika" as well as "The most Russian of the Parisians". She was a friend with Russian emigrants such as Prince Felix Yousoupoff, Theodore Chaliapine, or Alexander Vertinski. In 1950, in Nice, Ludmila meets her second husband, Johnny. In 1960, she created a restaurant, "The Russian Pavilion," a restaurant that the critics called "the most princely, the most chic of the Russian cabarets in Paris." Between the 60s and 80s, Ludmilla Lapato recorded numbers of Russian romances. In 2000, after a common life of 40 years, her husband, Johnny, dies. She left Paris for the French Riviera. “Russian Singer, known for her gypsy style of singing, russian romances. well known in france and throughout europe. She was married, had children, and has grandchildren. In China her father started the Lopato Cigarette company which still exists today, and is considered to be the higher class of cigarette. She died in France, but wanted to be buried in Latvia, and was interred there.” “Ludmilla Lopato made an international career as a gypsy singer and created the famous restaurant in Paris cabaret "Le Pavillon Russe" and Record recorded with Marc de Loutchek (one of the great specialist of Russian music in France. (Balalaika band)”. “The balalaika orchestra in its full form – balalaikas, domras, gusli, bayan, kugiklas, Vladimir Shepherd's Horns, garmoshkas and several types of percussion instruments – has a distinctive sound: strangely familiar to the ear, yet decidedly not entirely Western European.” “RENÉ CHALLAIN FERRET : Accompanist w/ Django Reinhardt of the year 1948 (shortly before Django completely renounces the support of the guitars), this cousin of Baro and Matelo (with whom he participated since 1938 in the adventure of the Gus Viseur's Music, modeled on the Hot Club formula ), Then became famous in Gypsy music, alongside pianist Valia Belinsky.” “Harbin, in the far north-east of China, used to be a very Russian metropolis. Once called the Paris of the east — although it’s not the only contender for the title — it was a haven for political refugees, fascists, Bolsheviks, painters and poets. Now, all that is gone…” “The term Harbin Russians or Russian Harbinites refers to several generations of Russians who lived in the city of Harbin, in Manchuria from approximately 1898 to the mid-1960s. Harbin, a major junction city on the Chinese Eastern Railway (CER), came successively under the control of the Ta-tsing (Qing dynasty) Empire, the Republic of China, Manchukuo and the People's Republic of China in this period. The people in the Soviet Union used the terms "KVZhDist" (Russian: ???????, "person of the China Eastern Railway" Russian: ????) and "Harbinets" (????????, "Harbinite/person from Harbin") to refer to a person with any type of ties to the China Eastern Railway.” From a book review: “In fortieth - star Parisian cabaret, singer of old songs, "Russian Marlene Dietrich". In the sixties and the owner of one of the popular emigrant restaurants... among her good friends were Mathilde Kschessinska and Prince Felix Yusupov, Alexander Galich and Rudolf Nureyev... About this and about many other things, starting with his childhood in exotic Harbin, in the family of "tobacco king", says - exciting, easy and Flirty - Ludmila Lopato. Literary record, Foreword and commentary by the famous historian of Russian fashion, Parisian and cosmopolitan Alexander Vasiliev.” Records will be carefully/responsibly packed. • Returns: If an item(s) is deemed “not as described” due to such circumstances as shipping damage or seller’s incorrect description of the item’s condition, it falls under the realm of the eBay Money Back Guarantee. The reason why I don’t have a return policy in addition to the eBay Money Back Guarantee is that return policies cover all other reasons for return (such as the buyer simply changing their mind) but they also require the seller to pay for shipping, which is an expense that I cannot afford, especially in the case of an international transaction.

  • International Shipping: I sympathize with int’l buyers regarding shipping charges and their country’s Customs fees, but because the value must be declared in order to insure the item for that amount, I’m unable to satisfy the expectations of most buyers in certain countries. If you’re an exception, all you need to do is let me know and hopefully we can work together!

  • Condition: Records may not function as intended per surface noise, defective playback due to manufacturing defect or scratches, etc. and any extant sleeves/covers often have damage such as flawed edges and odors which may require repair or treatment, so I’m selling the items as being in “For parts or not working” condition. Most records are in scratched condition. See Goldmine Record Album Price Guide, 5th Edition, page 17: “It’s estimated that no more than 2 to 4 percent of all records remaining from the 1950’s and 1960s are truly Near Mint” (and the next grade down from Near Mint is VG+, where light scratches are present). It amazes me that the world of record collecting doesn’t have an official grading company such as in the comic book field (they have CGC), the coin collecting realm (they have PCGS), etc. Until an official 3rd party industry expert comes along, record grading remains subjective and opinions vary due to parties’ differences in audio equipment, etc.
