The album's title comes from the names of three books of the Old Testament: Joshua, Judges, and Ruth.

While the album does not have one theme that binds all the songs, several tracks deal with "high concepts" such as religion ("Church") and death ("Family Reserve"). Lovett's renowned sense of humor and whimsy are temporarily set aside in favor of reflective musings on heartbreak and loss.

In keeping with Lovett's other releases, Joshua received critical acclaim but failed to vault the singer into mainstream success.

All the records I am selling come from my personal collection and have all been played at least once – so none are graded as mint. I have tried to grade them as subjectively and honestly as possible according to common record collector definitions. I haven’t played all of them all the way through (there are hundreds!) so the gradings may be based on a visual assessment and my memory of how they play. I am not an expert at grading.
