From the legendary California Hall in 1966 ...Janis Joplin's earliest recordings with the heavy psych backing band....chronicling the sound of Big Brother only a month after Janis Joplin joined. They're still getting themselves together, but Joplin already sounds powerful and much of the unreleased and material from the first album is heard here in development.

At this point in their career Big Brother And The Holding Company were still relying heavily on R&B and blues standards. The cool electrified jams include "I Know You Rider" (a favorite of the Grateful Dead), "Let the Good Times Roll," "Moanin' At Midnight," and "Blow My Mind." Joplin's take on Willie Mae ("Big Mama") Thornton's "Ball and Chain" was still developing into the full-blown showstopper she'd deliver a year later at the Monterey Pop Festival, and the rare single "Coo Coo" is presented in early form.
