Well handled from 53 years ago on the yellow Epic label. One of the groups essential LP highlights comes the still relatively under-appreciated TRY TOO HARD, LISTEN below!
This was an essential step in the Dave Clark Five, and their ability to stay on the level or even survive going into the later sixties after attaining world-class chart success from the early to mid sixties. Things were rapidly changing by 1966 where the Beatles, and even the Rolling Stones, were using sitars on their records; Brian Wilson was composing concept albums and vest-pocket pop symphonies, and folk-rock was so well established as a commercial music genre that its inventors, the Byrds, were compelled to find some new wrinkles to maintain their edge. In that environment, it was inevitable that the DAVE CLARK FIVE would allow their music to evolve. Enter "TRY TO HARD" the DC-5 album that goes unnoticed today but was the winning formula that kept their stars shining overhead.
From the crisp keyboard chords and lean, restrained guitar, as well as the energetic tone of Try Too Hard there was change in the air from the opening seconds of this LP. A sparkling nugget of '66 British song craft was released at the same time frame as "Rubber Soul" by the Beatles and contains a brightly snappy infectious edge, almost as good as anything on Rubber Soul.

Elsewhere. "I Never Will" is another cheerful and tuneful rocker with a gorgeous modulation, and "Looking In" is a similarly lyrical piece of rock 'n' roll, driven more by its keys and rhythm guitar parts (all punctuated by a soaring chorus), and missing are the saxes or pounding organ of prior years.
To keep things evolving, The DC-5 throws a curve-ball with "Ever Since You've Been Away" sounding like a winning theme from a lost Cliff Eastwood western movie (in fact, the melody and the break are very similar to the theme from Eastwood's famous "Hang 'Em High," written a YEAR after the DC-5 track). The rest of the album delivers enjoyable and ever exciting permutation of their basic sound that drove them to the highest levels in rock music.
