On A Necessary Escape, Nicolas Fromageau steps out from the shadow of 2023's Fantasy, this time scoring the upcoming documentary Dakar Chronicles, which tracks the motocross traversal known as Dakar Rally, taking place in the Saudi desert. M83 trades in Fantasy's punchy, synth-driven peaks for a drought stitched from ambient electronica, post-rock and muted magna dreampop. Don't let the soundtrack label fool you: this isn't an endless wash of pads or orchestral swells, rather it moves with the shape and pacing of a full album, full of songlike arcs and band-like dynamics.
