MACHITO--AFRO CUBAN JAZZ RARE MERCURY 10" FROM 1952 W/ BIRD, BUDDY RICH, FLIP PHILLIPS
This is a rare Mercury 10-incher from 1952. It's produced by Norman Granz and is on the original "pre-trumpet" Mercury label.
This album is in VG+ condition, in very nice shape. There is occasional, slight surface noise but it is not noticeable enough to detract from the enjoyment of the music. It's only slightly noticeable during the quiet pasages of this album, and there ain't too many of those (what grammar!). There's a few surface marks on the vinyl, which are totally inaudible. This record is an early example of brassy but beautiful Latin Jazz at its best, and unlike some Latin stuff, it really swings in a jazz sense. Charlie Parker, Buddy Rich ( who plays an astonishing drum solo on side 2), and Flip Phillips really wail on this album, which consists of various movements of a single piece--The Afro-Cuban Jazz Suite--with orchestra arranged and composed by Chico O'Farrill, who also conducted here.
The laminated David Stone Martin cover is in VG++ condition--no split seams and the spine is intact, too, save for a teeny-tiny speck of cover wear at the bottom left corner.
