This is the RAREST UK 7” Single issued by MADNESS on the Stiff record label. This is ‘Baggy Trousers’ that does not credit Mike Barson on the label for the song.

Baggy Trousers was first issued with a green version of this label and later issues had this light blue label. All of these issues credited ‘Baggy Trousers’ to

(G. McPherson / C Foreman / M Barson).

All of these issues were in fact incorrect and should not have included M Barson as a credit on the track. This mistake was also carried over to virtually all releases around the world.

Only at the end of the long chart run and immense amount of sales was this corrected. Hence there is only a VERY small amount of these singles which only credit

(G. McPherson / C Foreman).

Baggy Trousers sold 635,000 copies in the UK. The first few hundred thousand pressings had green labels. To feed the continuing demand, they were then repressed with blue labels. However, as the story goes, there was growing disquiet amongst the band at the error in the writing credit on the label for Baggy Trousers which included Mike Barson, as well as the actual writers; Chrissy Boy and Suggs. In the end apparently Chris asked Stiff that if any further copies were to be pressed that Mike's name be removed. In fact only a tiny batch more were pressed, possibly as few as 1000 and consequently the chances of finding the version with the Mike Barson credit removed remain at about 1 in 635! Valued conservatively in the Rare Records Price Guide book at £75, one of these sold last year on Ebay for over £100.
