MAL WALDRON TRIO - IMPRESSIONS New Jazz NJLP 8242 - Mono - Purple Label - RVG

ORIGINAL-ERA PRESSING
- Purple and silver New Jazz labels - "A Product of Prestige Records Inc., 203 S. Washington Ave., Bergenfield, N.J." at label rim - Machine-stamped RVG (Rudy Van Gelder) in the deadwax on BOTH sides - Hand-etched matrix: NJLP-8242-A / NJLP-8242-B - No deep groove on either side - this is the early 1960s purple label pressing (circa 1963 per Discogs) from the original RVG metal, not the 1959 deep groove first pressing and not a later reissue - Recorded by Rudy Van Gelder at Hackensack, March 20, 1959 - Scarce pressing - only 27 copies in Discogs collections against 148 wants
THE MUSIC
Mal Waldron's brooding, Monk-inflected trio work in its early prime, with Addison Farmer on bass and Al "Tootie" Heath on drums. Side A is all Waldron originals including the 10-minute "Ciao!"; Side B works through standards including "All The Way" and "With A Song In My Heart." One of the strongest of Waldron's Prestige-era trio dates.
CONDITION
VINYL: Very Good Plus (VG+), visual grade - not play tested. Glossy with strong luster on both sides. Light hairlines and faint scuffs visible under direct light on both sides, plus scattered paper dust from the old inner sleeve. One short white surface mark on Side B that appears superficial. No gouges, no needle-drop marks seen. Labels are clean and sharp on both sides.
Prior owner (my late father, a careful collector who bought this from Disk Union Japan) graded this record NM/EX in his notes: "Record is clean and glossy." His grading ran conservative. I am grading it VG+ from my own inspection to be safe.
JACKET: Very Good (VG) with heavy wear - read carefully. - Top seam is split the full width of the jacket - Spine is split approximately 10 inches - Heavy edge and corner wear with fraying and exposed cardboard at seams and corners - Approx 4 inch crease at top right corner of front panel - Front image still presents well when displayed Priced accordingly. If you want this scarce Waldron title with a strong RVG record, this is a fair way in.
