Manfred Mann Chapter Three 1Y3 / 2Y3 1st Press Vertigo Philips credit 1969
This first pressing plays with phenomenal audio with no intrusion at all.  Having listened to both sides in full I can categorically say this is one of finest Vertigo pressings I have ever heard.  The clarity of sound is exceptional - every section is 'as new' I am confident in saying and there is no distortion on the top end.  Admittedly there is a 'squeak' at the end of S1, literally at the end of the fade out and it seems unfair to downgrade it because of that!  It is without doubt a FINAL UPGRADE archive pressing because in my opinion it could not play any better.  The vinyl is also in superb condition which will not come as a surprise and has only been sparingly played in its near 56 years.
The gatefold is so often found with a lot of fading / surface rub and whilst this has some around the edges on both sides it has to be one of the best I have perfect.  Not perfect but still impressive and no sticker removal mark which makes a change!  The original Vertigo swirl inner is also in excellent condition.
This first pressing has the 1Y3 / 2Y3 matrix and the 'A Philips Record Product' on the S2 label and on the back cover.

Visual description
The vinyl is in lovely condition and still retains a superb glossy sheen with no marks or scratches.  Under a strong light I can only see a small number of ultra faint hairlines and even they are difficult to find.  There is no groove or surface wear and the run out grooves are extremely clean also.  The iconic Vertigo labels are in superb order with no marking and only a little spindle wear.
Play grading
The run in on S1 is static free and then the quiet intro on 'Travelling Lady' plays with perfect clarity as does the opening vocal section.  The first brass section is just as impressive and it continues to play with stunning quality.  The jazzy improv middle section could not play any better and from start to finish there is no background, the playback is so clean and precise.  The production is perhaps not the best, not enough bass and depth in my opinion, but the clarity cannot be faulted.  No intrusion, no distortion.  Hugg's breathy vocal suits their 'sound' perfectly and the fade out has no background either.  Mint all the way.
'Snakeskin Garter' is almost as good.  Almost!  The only background is one very quiet static during the brief quieter section just over halfway through.  However, that is me being super picky!  York's bass section towards the end is stunning and this track easily deserves a Mint- grade.
The instrumental 'Konekuf' plays with stunning precision through every section with no background.  As good as new basically, I cannot pay it any higher compliment.  Quite 'busy', especially towards the end, but the audio does not suffer for it.  Each note still very sharp and distinct.  Mint
The more melodic 'Sometimes' once again shows just how well this vinyl has been looked after, hardly ever played obviously!  The clarity here is 100% perfect - many of the tracks seem to have a lengthy fade out and yet so far they all play without even a single dust tick / static sound.  Incredible!  Another Mint track.
Another eclectic track in 'Devil Woman' and the audio is exceptional.  The slow build up intro is so quiet and yet... no background.  The opening vocal is equal to that and this high end standard is kept up as it progresses.  Superb musicianship as you would expect from all concerned and the clarity of sound is first class from the first note... ok there is a 'squeak' sound literally at the end of the fade out, you can barely hear the music, so it seems a little harsh to downgrade it because of that so I will say Mint-
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another perfect run in and the intro on 'Time' is just as impressive.  Hugg's first vocal is 'as new' and that can also be said for the following brass section.  From then on it plays in the style we have become accustomed to!  Perfectly!  Another slow and brooding track every section plays with sublime quality and that is exemplified by Living's mid flute solo.  This section plays with STUNNING precision and the very quiet passage that follows plays beautifully with zero intrusion.  The remainder has not so much as a dust tick and the long fade out - you have to hear it to believe it!  This may be the longest track on the album but it unequivocally plays as MINT all the way through.  The most 'complete' version I have ever heard.   The more up tempo 'One Way Glass' is absolutely STUNNING!  From the bass intro, the first vocal, the first classic brass 'chorus' the playback is as sharply defined as you would want it to be and it proceeds in the same way.  I cannot overstate how immaculate the audio is and it's just a shame it's not longer!  The closing instrumental is phenomenal and I have no hesitation in grading this classic track as Mint - sublime clarity, power and definition throughout.
'Mister You're A Better Man Than I' has one mega quiet static on the intro (don't know why I mention it!) and the opening vocal has no intrusion at all.  The mid instrumental plays with sublime clarity - the end part is so so quiet and again the playback in spectacular!  Yes a couple of barely audible statics but that does not qualify as interference.  So clean and warm and as the percussion and vocal return the audio is just as strong and clear.  It has to grade as Mint I can't mark it down for a couple of barely audible statics!
'Ain't It Sad' plays without fault from start to finish with no background.  A perfect Mint version.
'A Study In Inaccuracy' more than keep this fine standard and plays with impeccable quality.  A 'busy' freeform number the sonic quality is superb, there is no distortion, and the ultra quiet fade out / in section is fantastic!  As is the closing section and fade out.  Mint
The delicate piano intro on 'Where Am I Going' plays beautifully with zero background and Hugg's opening vocal is just as clean.  A relatively quiet number and every section plays with stunning clarity and warmth including the fade out, no surprise there!  Again worthy of a Mint grade.  I mean what an album, in essence it plays 'as new' I am 100% confident in saying that.
The Gatefold & Vertigo Swirl Inner
The cover is in excellent shape overall with only some light wear.  The edges have barely any rubbing and the wide spine has only a handful of minor 'specks' and a small area on compression.  The corners have only very minimal wear and the opening edge is the same.  The front cover has only a little fading / surface rub around the edges but much less than usual as stated and the back cover is similar.  A few small creases either side of the spine as is common.  The inside of the gatefold again has only a little fading around around the edges and some minor creasing / lift around the inner spine which you often find with this two-piece gatefold.  A very strong example overall.
The original poly-lined Vertigo inner has no side splits or tears and only minimal marking.  Some light creasing also.

Postage & Packaging

I will only send items items worldwide via tracked shipping.  This provides 'peace of mind' in case of loss or damage.  The shipping costs are shown below and combined shipping is always offered.  Any over-payment will always be refunded.

The Royal Mail only insure up to a value of £250 so if an item sells for more it may be wise to use a courier service (e.g. Parcelforce or DPD).  An extra insurance premium will be required but I will not know the exact amount until the final sale price is known.  Because of this I will sometimes have to estimate the cost and this will be shown in the listing.  Please wait for the invoice before making payment and if you have any questions please feel free to ask.  Many thanks.

All vinyls are packaged in strong over-sized custom made mailers with plenty of extra cardboard protection.  They are placed inside separate poly-lined inners outside the cover so as to avoid seam splits in transit and then placed inside a PVC sleeve to provide even more protection.  I pride myself on my high quality packaging as my feed confirms and if any customer has any specific requirements I am more than happy to help.

The mailers I use cost £1.00 each and I will use anything between 3-5 cardboard stiffeners which cost approx £0.18 each.  There is also the cost of the poly-lined inner and PVC sleeve to consider, it all adds up!  Not forgetting that eBay take 10% of the shipping fee also!!
