Description
As you may be aware, white label promo pressings are superior first pressings of a release intended for the higher audio fidelity standards of radio broadcast and are pressed on higher quality vinyl able to withstand repeated play. In the case of United Artists, primarily a movie company, their vinyl promo releases, all in MONO, are very few in number per release, almost on an individual request basis. The rarest of all are both versions of The Beatles ‘ A Hard Day’s Night ’. In fact, the only reason United Artists signed The Beatles to do a film is so that UA could get the soundtrack release. The idea of having to promote the record release at a time when all things Beatle were flying out the door seemed like a waste of money, especially when Capitol Records would be pushing the movie to sell their Beatle catalog. As a result, a relatively small number of white label mono only promos were pressed and distributed. The same held true for the film soundtrack of Gerry & The Pacemakers ‘ Ferry ‘Cross The Mersey ‘. As a result of the soundtrack successes of these two films, UA decided to dabble in the record business, signing a few artists like Manfred Mann, The Spencer Davis Group, The Wailers to contracts. For monetary reasons, UA again was stingy with WLP lps, making them all very collectable.
