The group's second British album — released just as the original lineup was entering a state of collapse with the impending departure of two key members — shows some of the changes that can happen in a year, as they moved away from Chess Records' brand of blues as their baseline.
Instead, they produced a sound that's slightly smoother and a lot more soulful.
A handful of originals, mostly by Mike Vickers and Mike Hugg with one Paul Jones-authored number thrown in, are scattered amid covers of songs originated by the Temptations, the Skyliners, and T-Bone Walker.
If it isn't as fierce, bold, or daringly ambitious as the Manfreds' debut long-player, Mann Made is just as much a virtuoso effort, and a surprisingly cohesive one, considering that it was released immediately after Mike Vickers and Paul Jones announced their respective departures from the band
Side 1:
Since I Don't Have You / You're For Me / Look Away / The Abominable Snowmann / Watch You Step / Stormy Monday / I Realy Do Believe
Side 2:
Hi Lili, Hi Lo / The Way You Do The Things You Do / Bare Hugg / You Don't Know Me / L.S.D. / I'll Make It Up To You
LABELS: EXCELLENT+
Clean, unmarked labels - light/moderate spindle traces
VINYL Visual: NEAR MINT
Both surfaces shine like new with nothing but a couple of superficial and harmless light marks
VINYL Audio: NEAR MINT
My play-check at volume found practically nothing to fault the strong, deep, rich and warm MONO cut - just a touch of low-level surface noted between tracks - nothing really - a fine sounding copy which would be pretty hard to beat
SLEEVE: EXCELLENT+
Crisp and sharp with a deep gloss to the front laminate and a clean back - and like all the other records from this guys collection (which I will be listing shortly) the opening edges have been protected with clear tape (please see close-up photos) which means they are also crisp and sharp
