Label Conditions: Both very clean, highly attractive and retain a genuine freshness that’s so unusual on this album. This being her most popular 1960s title, and so often played into submission. Any spindle traces on this one are very few, fine and faint. Evidence suggests a very little played copy, this reiterated by very clean sound quality.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce and rarely seen in such fine visual and playing condition. Most heavily played on vintage mono equipment that inflicted severe and often penetrating marks with serious groove wear and damage – please look at my close-up picture of the inner sleeve text that mentions the 10 grams tracking weight – it almost makes you cringe to think these mono records were often subjected to such tracking forces, no wonder most seen are worn out. This has minimal surface blemishes, no scratches or sound issues.

Mother & Stamper Codes: 1 B / 1 H (both letters are unclear, these my best interpretations).

Brief Info: Marianne’s second UK Decca album and it proved to be her most popular. When she returned in the latter part of the 1970s a very different sounding woman appeared with far more radical material, content and voice. This is my personal favourite from her early catalogue, the second of four issued on Decca and it sold fairly well. Another lovely record from the gentle pop-folk of the early Faithfull sound. This is a strong all-round example – the flimsy thin card cover has withstood the test-of-time well but does have a quite neat date on the back. The record itself plays superbly well, and never take this for granted. The vast majority of these I have seen have been heavily played with covered with marks and sometimes deep scratches. For fans needing this scarce record, it will prove difficult to find substantially better.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): not taking into account of the 1967 date written on the back, any opinion of this is purely subjective. A single format, the front laminated with Clarifoil, this wraps around the closed edges and ends on the back via the spine. The top and bottom edges end into the inside flaps. Printed and made in England by Clout & Baker, includes the original polylined inner sleeve.

Lamination & Front: One of the female faces of the swinging 60s, and seldom will this front be seen a great deal better. The laminate retains superb, fresh shine and clarity with hardly any creasing and no lifting or dulling worthy of note. Under light, a hint of rim impression that is nigh-on impossible to avoid with such thin card. Clarifoil has a strong tendency to shrink and pull, so lifting or bowing is seldom avoided – but incredibly this has avoided both. The bottom corner tips have small creases and a faint trace of toning on the exposed right edge strip where the laminate ends naturally short. But little detracts from this lovely front, Marianne’s portrait is simply gorgeous as seen.

Cover Back: These black and white unprotected backs have a major tendency for grubbiness and ageing. Any here is very light and mild indeed with just gentle traces around the edges. The date in blue pen is neat, reasonably small and appearing slightly faded – as it would be over time. The lack of creasing, ring wear, marks or scuffs more than compensates, given how difficult these vintage unprotected backs are, this one has fared well.

Top Edge: Very thin, but still generally straight with minimal hint of bowing. Hardly worn either with even the card end panel neat.

Bottom Edge: Pretty much as above, better if anything.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp with barely any hint of wear, any thickening or burr traces minuscule, even viewed end-on. Often these early thin card Decca covers suffer tears or thumb creases, but not this one. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid and straight, but likely compressed, but this not absolutely certain, it is quite flat anyway. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and unpeeled laminate, this is uncracked and ultra smooth and clear. The text even beautifully centred on the narrow depth.

Corners: Very little corner tip wear, but a little light tip creasing being somewhat critical. No bashes and any evidence of dinking gentle and light.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this very fragile mid-1960’s cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. Okay, a small date on the back, but not much else to fault, a delicate and now getting scarce album to please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT: or very close to. This vintage Polylined Decca inner is a real heavyweight in its own right, made with thicker paper than standard issue inner sleeves. It has the comprehensive details are playing of mono records with some detail shown in close-up. Just gently aged with the usual paper discolouration with two immaculate window circles and a more semi-transparent polylining. Minimal creasing and all edges unsplit with no repairs.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: which hardly does this splendid record full justice. A lovely looking record with fine shine and no stylus scratches at all. Under light, a few very gentle paper surface scuffs are visible, but these are almost as light as they get and totally harmless. Finding 1965 mono records a great deal better will never prove easy and this overall has been well-looked after with minimal hairlines and no sound degrading. Remember, just one jolt or arm drop from a very heavy tracking Dansette or similar record player of the era, would mean a deep scratch or crater inflicted on any delicate surface. This copy has avoided such trauma and any minor surface blemishes I consider normal with generally little and careful usage. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: A delicate album, but this quality mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Offering strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is high with a wide dynamic range and detailed sound. For those who know this, and other early Marianne Faithful albums, will be aware there are (very occasionally) emphasis on the ‘ess’ words – known as sibilence. That is purely a recording matter and all copies are the same. All remain are sharp and precise as possible and barely any surface or unwanted sound were noted. Overall an exceptional clean pressing, as you would expect from Decca with no tracking issues*. Few copies will match or outperform this early example. Both channels are clean and sharp when played on my stereo LP12, this album was not issued in stereo. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this impressive record, always a delight to hear such an old disc sounding so clean and impressive. This too played on a very revealing system for which this record was not really designed. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and merits strong recommendation.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. Really rare and expensive albums will even be Double Boxed if deemed necessary and possible. When larger boxes are used, the thick record and stiffener ‘sandwich’ is then thickly embedded into bubble-wrap to bulk out the record inside the box to centre the item inside to reduce the risk of damage still further. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
