Brief Info: After an absence of 10 years, Faithfull issued a soft county comeback album in 1977. But now in 1979 she issued a classic – even agreed by the artist herself – gone is the 1960s folk-pop and the gentle softer voice. This album is VERY different and most consider it the greatest album she ever made. A hard-hitting, uncompromising and scathing album with no holding back. The voice is now considerably deeper and harder, the music gritty and full-on with heartfelt raw emotion, almost like an act of exorcising demons. Skillfully blending elements of rock, punk, new wave and electronica, it includes a low-charting ‘hit’ single with the superb ‘The Ballad of Lucy Jordan’ with a heavy synthesiser backing. Not overly commercial as such but hugely admired by critics and those who bought it at the time, myself included. Her version of Lennon’s ‘Working Class Hero’ is even more full-on than the original. But the final song ‘Why’d Ya Do It’ caused a storm and shock waves. It has been described as the most honest ‘Love Song’ ever written and is possibly the most scathing ever put to a vinyl record. Banned in places, this is a song that is highly unlikely to ever get a radio play. It’s use of four letter words in a torrent of vitriolic abuse is all the more shocking being sung by a female artist, and there are no holds barred. Even after around 35 years, this song still has the ability to chill and shock the listener. Brutally honest and all the more magnificent for it – this is a brilliant album and for those who have yet to discover it, it is unreservedly recommended. It did not really sell that well in the UK, only peaking at a modest 57, but did better elsewhere. This a lovely copy, the record looks barely even played and sounds terrific with a host of top-quality backing musicians including ex-Traffic’s Steve Winwood and Darrel Way formerly of Curved Air and Wolf (to name just two). If any album put this legendary singer into the Hall of Fame – ‘Broken English’ is that album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single unlaminated format with matt, smooth surfaces. Printed and made in England, uncredited. Includes the Island promotional inner sleeve.

Cover Front: Minimal wear on a challenging dark unprotected cover. A small few gentle surface marks and fine edge hairline type creases which are small and show little. The lack of ringwear and rubbing always excellent news on this one.

Cover Back: Similar again, but even better.

Top Edge: Straight and showing hardly any wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Same again.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, very sharp, any thickening or burring minuscule, even as seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Solid, straight with minimal compression. Small rub traces here and there, but the text largely intact and most-all present.

Corners: Any tip rubbing small to tiny. All retain excellent shape with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this quite wear-prone cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. This attractive item, and a cover that is greatly admired like the album itself, should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: PRACTICALLY MINT: and this unlined paper promotional inner sleeve is seldom seen without splits or tears. Clearly a slightly later copy as this promotes Marianne’s very fine, but far less lauded follow-up album ‘Dangerous Acquaintances’ from 1981. This inner sleeve looks like it has just left the factory and has no splits, repairs or creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(++): or better. A superb visual copy that is very clean with equally fine shine and quite solidly pressed. A copy barely even played on all the evidence with any surface traces minuscule, even as viewed critically under bright angled light. Visually a beautiful, fresh record that should please most-all collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This brilliant album – and this is not hype – there can be few better ‘comeback’ albums than this – it plays even above it’s high visual grading with barely anything to fault. Just one mild click heard on a fade-out only, it offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sound barely even registered and this is an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. Few copies will outperform this top-pressed example which is superbly produced and engineered. Full-on, dynamic, even intense sound, which gives the songs and the ‘new’ vocal range a real edge and sonic delivery. Few could have predicted what they were about to hear when hearing this for the first time – myself included at the back end of the 1970s. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has barely left the sleeve, hardly played or handled. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record, not actually heard a vinyl copy of this for some considerable, this totally blew me away. It will prove very difficult to find significantly better and is unreservedly recommended.

* As played-graded on a high-end Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge tracking at 2.2 grams.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
