Some 20 years on from its original release, Mark Lanegan's voice - rugged yet malleable, elevating tales of the seedy underbelly of life - is as compelling as ever. Bubblegum XX marked a partial return to Lanegan's grungier roots, with guest spots from Greg Dulli, Dean Ween and Josh Homme adding to the album's raw energy. Tracks like 'Can't Come Down' and 'Methamphetamine Blues' are often looked at as the best songs on the album, but Lanegan's collaborations with PJ Harvey on 'Hit the City' and 'Come to Me' continue to grow, echoing the allure of her Uh Huh Her era. Lanegan excels in moody, blues-infused tracks like 'When Your Number Isn't Up' and the Tom Waits-esque 'Like Little Willie John'. The album's rawness and emotional depth make it just as essential as ever.
