On offer is a 1966 LP - AUSTRALIAN SONGS BY MARTYN WYNDHAM READ on W & G RECORDS, catalogue number WG-B-2597. Released on a small Australian label, this was the first full solo LP by the English-born Read (resident in Australia 1960’67), who would later record for Topic, Trailer and Argo and is still active as a singer and song collector.
With the Bush Band - Jim Buchanan, Peter Dickie, David Lumsden and Dave Cameron - and recorded by Ade Monsbourgh. Songs are: The Flash Stockman/The Convict Maid/The Shearer’s Dream/The Inglewood Cocky/The Old Keg of Rum/Flash Jack From Gundagai/O For Me Grog/The Streets of Forbes/The Lachlan Tigers/Bold Jack Donahue/Five and a Zack/Death of Ben Hall/The Rybuck Shearer/A Nautical Yarn/The Lime Juice Tub.
AUSTRALIAN SONGS is a first pressing and so rare it appears neither on Wyndham Read’s website or his Wikipedia entry. The labels are in excellent condition. The record is in excellent condition with clicks or pops attributable to the quality of the vinyl stock in Australia in the mid-sixties. The thin laminate sleeve is in excellent condition with slight signs of ringer for added authenticity. In short, as good as you’ll find anywhere.
The album comes from the collection of the late Ian Chappell, director of the Hampshire-based South Eastern Museums Service. A devoted collector of folk music, Chappell would obsessively buy multiple copies of the same record in search of vinyl perfection. They were acquired by the seller at auction from Omega Auctions of Stockport in June 2012.
