Eccentric isn't strictly a genre, but it neatly sums up the musical output of Master Wilburn Burchette. Occult Concert, his debut, first appeared in 1971 and would be the first of seven albums in a seven-year run. After such a productive period, he simply turned his back on his musical work. This album is pitched somewhere between a series of classical guitar improvisations, spiritual explorations and bedroom noodling. There is something about these compositions that is beguiling and compelling, however, and that is the magic(k) of Burchette's songwriting. To hear these songs is to be taken on a journey to who knows where. The title might suggest something otherworldly going on, but in essence he creates a calming ambience that is remarkably easy to get lost in. It comes as no surprise to learn that Burchette was well versed in mysticism and parapsychology. This is an album that transcends definition by design; transcendence is its fundamental aim.
