Mauricio Kagel "1898" LP issued by Deutsche Grammophon (2543 007) in Germay, 1973. Gatefold sleeve. ****** Rec:ex / Cov:ex ****** Beautiful gatefold LP with a superb experimental work commissioned by the Deutsche Grammophon company to commemorate their 75th anniversary. For this piece, Kagel collaborated with violin-maker Franz-Ernst Peschke to explore the strange sounds of custom-built string instruments fitted with the bells of brass instruments, creating overtone-rich acoustic amplification. These are mixed with a handful of more traditional instruments playing from a partly indeterminate score, and snippets of a wild assortment of sounds made by a group of untrained, unrehearsed school children recorded by Kagel. The performers are Aloys Kontarsky, piano, Christoph Caskel, percussion, Saschko Gawriloff, custom violin, Siegfried Palm, custom cello, Adam Bauer, trumpet, Kurt Schwertsik, horn, Armin Rosin, trombone, Robert Tucci, tuba, Brigitte Sylvestre, harp, Gerard Ruymen, custom viola, Georg Nothdorf, custom contrabass, and conductors Mauricio Kagel and Silvio Foretic. The fantastic cover has a vinyl deconstruction fetishist design that must have been influenced by the Broken Music ideas of Fluxus artist Milan Knizak; no cover artist is credited, but it seems almost certainly to have been designed by Kagel himself. Kagel stood apart from many of the composers in Cologne at this juncture, as he really didn't employ serialism; he had adopted, and abandoned, such techniques already when he was in Argentina. Like John Cage, Kagel was more interested in the actionability of music-making than in negotiating specific pitch choices and in finding a unique framework on which to build them. Such lack of concern naturally leads to a sense of randomness regarding pitch, and the harmonic profile of this music can be dense, clustery, and blocky. However, Kagel's irreverent, free-spirited weirdness is far more interesting and groovy than much of the music coming out of the Darmstadt school in the early '60s. ****** Four page liner notes booklet also included (attached to the inner gateford sleeve). ****** Very minimal cover wear near the spine. no spine or seams split. ****** Please wait to receive my invoice before sending the payment after the auction ends.
