Description
MAX ROACH + FOUR
EMARCY 36098 Oct 1956 MONO
This is Max Roach’s first disc after the deaths of the great Quintet members Clifford Brown and Richie Powell in an auto accident in June of 1956. It was recorded in September and released in October of that year. The only members of the original quintet are Roach and bassist George Morrow, Ray Bryant replaces Powell and Kenny Dorham replaces Brown. The fact that makes the disc really stand out is the addition of Sonny Rollins instead of Harold Land.
Dorham does his best to fill the unfillable void left by Brown, he was always an underrated trumpet player and shows off his inventiveness and hard edged sound nicely here. But it is Roach and Rollins to my ear that make this a special record, listen to them trade 4s on Ezz-thetic, or the way Roach comments behind his soloing on Mr. X. This is a truly amazing set that has lived in the shadow of the majestic quintet and its tragedy. It deserves better.
This disc is in excellent + condition it plays quiet and clean throughout. Full shine with nice labels, it has a few light scuffs and a light 2 inch surface scratch on side one that does not sound. A beautiful disc
The sleeve is also excellent +. No extraneous marks, the picture is near mint, no ringwear, little fading, there is a 1/8 inch tear/chip on the lower left corner and some fade of the white framing. There is no splitting at all just a small ding on the lower right entry. The spine is very good with a little fade. The back is clean with just a little creaming of the white mostly around the edge. (Please look at pixs)
This is an excellent collectors disc, deep groove mono, it really plays beautifully (I am listening to it right now).
I listen to the entire record before I list. I am not one of those sellers who is looking at the disc under a 500 watt bulb, I am interested letting you know how the disc looks, what the obvious and less obvious marks are but more importantly I am interested, like you, in how the disc sounds,
I am a fair grader and my system is unforgiving, I use an Ortophon 2 red with an Audio-Technica 1240 (tracking 1.8g), a Marantz pm 6005 and Bowers and Wilkins speakers, little escapes unheard). Before you purchase a record from me I want you to know as close as is possible (listening is a subjective art) what you are getting.
I am including not including the original inner sleeve it was the clef glycine junk, I have placed the disc in a MOFI anti-scratch, anti-static master sleeve.
I ship usps priority 2 day, the US post built the country, it is our most treasured institution we should all support it against efforts to privatize and destroy it.
