This live recording documents the epic encounters between two of jazz's greatest improvisers at Columbia University's McMillin Theatre on December 15, 1979.

Max Roach has recorded many avant garde albums in a duet setting, but according to Roach, HISTORIC CONCERTS is his favorite duet outing. What's interesting about this pairing is that Roach and Cecil Taylor approach their respective instruments in seemingly opposing ways. Roach is undoubtedly one of the most melodic of all jazz drummers, while Taylor is one of the most percussive of all pianists. Together, the music they conjure up has many surprising twists.

4 1/2 Stars - Very Good Plus - ...[Roach and Taylor] circle each other in short solos, then pounce into ferocious duets; amid brilliant, all-out energy slaloms, Roach drops down to offer pulses that Taylor, with typical stubbornness, usually refuses to ride--though the two of them connect on deeper levels throughout....

I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY. MINT means factory sealed, never opened or played. NM is opened but in visually brand new, out-of-the-packaging clean condition. NM- is not NM! Its a grade above VG++ and below Near Mint - it does not imply perfect. In my terminology Scratches are feeler type and Scuffs are just cosmetic and usually inaudible.
