Artist:  MAX ROACH QUINTET

                                     

Title:   “MAX ROACH + FOUR AT NEWPORT”

 

Label:   EmArcy.  Label is blue with silver text, large drummer logo, with deep groove.  FIRST PRESSING.  Monaural.  Catalog number is MG-36140. 

 

Year:   1958

 

Personnel:   George Coleman – tenor sax;  Booker Little – trumpet;  Ray Draper – tuba;  Art Davis – bass;  Max Roach – drums. 

 

NOTE:  Recorded during performance at the Newport Jazz Festival, Newport, R.I., July 6, 1958. 

 

FROM THE LINER NOTES:  “Now comes Roach’s newest group, one which made its formal debut at the Newport Jazz Festival on July 6, 1958, and whose performance was recorded for this album.  Typically, Max selected musicians little-known to either the jazz public or most musicians…”

 

Condition: 

 

DISC:  Vinyl is beautiful NM- with full original gloss.  Has been played a small number of times and handled with care.  There are a couple slight hairline paper scuffs but no serious or audible marks or problems.  Plays beautifully with superb fidelity.  Labels are clean.  A very fine playing copy.      

 

JACKET:   Jacket is nice VG+ to VG++.  Would grade solid VG++ except for staining on reverse due to the effects of storage, and small split at bottom center that is just starting.  Reverse has darkened slightly with age.  No writing, stickers, cutout indications, or other problems.  Overall a very presentable jacket to accompany the fine disc.
