Somewhere between KAK and SRC, much beautiful, heartfelt psych-rock, with a strangely loose/tight approach to timing. Some marvelous moments, and really one of the gems if you dig this kind of stuff. Uplifting if you play it at the right time. The guitar work here is fantastic from beginning to end in this Maryland prog psych lp that features really ambitious writing, especially the story of drowning sailors in "Under a Wave" and the "Henry Stared" mini-epic about a man's revelation. Really the album has few weaknesses, but it would have garnered a perfect rating had the band brought in maybe an organ, keyboard or a horn on a few songs.  The bass, guitar and drums are really some of the best I have heard in a while.

A former Maypole band member reflects how the very involved producer created the recording process -- dividing one track into 2 with a sudden explosion sound effects. In other places the record is filled with sound effects injected in the immediacy and power of the band's attack. Overall, the band shows undeniable talent and promise, and the guitar playing is intricate and heavy at once -- it's fun to listen to, and to hear the ideas and the musicianship.

With their recording label (Colossus) about to slide into bankruptcy the album was released with little fanfare or financial support.  The band toured behind the set, opening for the likes of Nils Lofgrin and Grin and The Bob Seger System, but the album quickly ending up in cutout bins.  In an odd career choice the band subsequently relocated to Holland (home for most of the other Colossus label acts) where they paid their bills as a moderately popular concert act.  Unfortunately drugs and other lifestyle excesses saw numerous personnel changes including the addition of former 'Good Grief bassist John Lutz.  By 1972 the band had collapsed, though several members briefly continued performing as 'The Flying Circus' followed by an equally brief stint as 'Sass'.  Tobell went on to play with a number of bands including Contraband, Mean Green and Ozz.

The PROMOTIONAL, RADIO STATION-, AUDITION OR DEMONSTRATION COPIES AND RELEASES (such as the one we have here) were often distributed among the radio stations before the record was released to the public, sometimes as much as four months ahead. These records are generally considered to be the "first among equals", which is to say the VERY FIRST generation and the VERY FIRST pressings of the particular title; a PROTOTYPE and the earliest known official pressing of the record.

·       CONDITION:

·       RECORD

(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we  grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant). For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

·       COVER

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT VERY GOOD++ (VG++).

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a partially split spine (between 2 and 4 inches  / 5 to 10 centimeters)

-        Cover has some fraying/wear along the spine

-        Visible shelf wear noted on the bottom seam

-        Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2.

-        Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record),  probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.

-        Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on back side, apparently from aging.

NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE  COVER
