Mazzy Star's Among My Swan is a softer, lonelier, inwarder record, forming the third most popular album by the band after She Hangs Brightly and So Tonight That I Might See. Now reissued by the label that first released it, the band take their cues from the spectral minimals of Third/Sister Lovers and the Velvet Underground's quieter corners; grounding itself in bluesy forms, the edges are blurred, as Hope Sandoval's husky voice hovers somewhere between sigh and spell, a hushed presence gliding through David Roback's gauzy slide guitar and warm organ tones. A subtle, narcotic sway is represented in latent cygnet tones, not chasing attention, but rewarding close listening with moments of quiet hypnosis.
