MDC – Millions of Dead Cops MDC (Millions of Dead Cops) is an American hardcore punk band formed in Austin, Texas, in 1979. Known for their ferocious speed, politically charged lyrics, and confrontational stance, MDC became one of the defining bands of early hardcore punk and a major influence on crossover thrash.
Originally named The Stains, the band changed their name to MDC in 1981 and released their groundbreaking debut album, Millions of Dead Cops (1982). The album delivered a relentless sonic assault with rapid-fire drumming, distorted guitars, and Dave Dictor’s piercing vocals. Lyrically, MDC tackled themes such as police brutality, corporate corruption, racism, and animal rights, making them one of the most politically outspoken bands in the punk scene.
Musical Style & Influence MDC’s sound combined the raw intensity of hardcore punk with elements of thrash, foreshadowing the rise of crossover thrash in the mid-to-late 1980s. Their lyrics were often satirical and direct, taking aim at the government, police, and societal injustices. Over time, the band experimented with different styles, including metal, folk punk, and even rockabilly, but always maintained their politically charged identity.
Key Releases Millions of Dead Cops (1982) – The classic debut, featuring anthems like John Wayne Was a Nazi, Born to Die, and I Remember. Smoke Signals (1986) – A more refined production, incorporating elements of crossover thrash. This Blood’s for You (1987) – Further explores metal influences while maintaining hardcore aggression. Metal Devil Cokes (1989) – A satirical take on their own name, featuring heavier, more metallic sounds. Hey Cop!!! If I Had a Face Like Yours... (1991) – A return to hardcore roots with a scathing political message. Despite lineup changes, Dave Dictor remained the band’s driving force, continuing to tour and release music into the 2000s and beyond. MDC remains a cornerstone of anarcho-punk and hardcore, with their influence extending into later punk, thrash, and crust scenes.
