Description
This is the extremely rare 1963 album 'THIS IS MERSEYBEAT Volume 1'. It is an original 1st pressing on the ORIOLE label, cat # PS 40047 (MONO). The triple-flipback cover is slighty less than Excellent but still very presentable. The labels are nice and clear, although I must point out that someone has written the initials 'B.C.' in faint pencil on the side 1 label. This is too faint to show in photos or scans. There is no spindle-marking that I can see. The vinyl is very nice with plenty of sheen. There are a few (and I do mean just a few!) light surface marks and one slightly heavier mark. These do not sound on my mid-fi deck, but may cause the odd quiet 'click' on more sensitive equipment. The sound quality is, in fact, quite superb and captures the raw freshness of Merseybeat as it was in the early days before being tamed by the 'pop' maestro's of the time. When you compare this to the bland output of the 'legion of Bobbys' who ruled the charts prior to the Merseybeat phenomenon you can understand how these guys (led by THE BEATLES) just blew away the opposition almost overnight! This album is valued at £70.00 in the 2010 Rare Record Price Guide, which gives you an indication of how very rare it actually is.
