Description
Gramophone Co Special Pressing (U.K.) Dame Nellie MELBA (soprano): Elaine - L'amour est pur comme la flamme (Bemberg) Matrix: 690c (visible in run-off area) Recorded 21 City Road, London, 7 July 1906, with piano accomp by the COMPOSER, Herman Bemberg (who wrote this opera for her, the de RESZKE brothers and Pol PLANCON!), and Ladies Chorus. CREATOR, Covent Garden, 1892. UNPUBLISHED, except in the USA as the very rare private subscription issue IRCC 17. White label shellac pressings were manufactured in the UK by the Gram Co, at request, until 1947, when manpower had become too expensive and the risk of damage to the masters unacceptable. This service was not cheap, and few collectors had the money to take full advantage of it. Also, many collectors were simply not aware of its existence - especially where unpublished material was concerned as there was virtually nothing in the way of discographical information available. Hence, only a handful of copies are known to have been pressed. This special one-sided shellac pressing on premium quality shellac, from the original matrix, reproduces better than a mint G&T original! GORGEOUS wear-free copy.
Please Note: The shipping cost listed by eBay is incorrect. Please contact me for exact shipping costs. Single shellac 78rp records are heavier than vinyl LPs and fragile. They require careful packing which adds to the weight of a parcel. All USA shipments sent at cost plus $2 shipping costs via Media Mail w. Delivery Confirmation.
I have been a dealer in rare 78rpm discs since 1992, and offer only records in top condition - no scratches, stressed grooves, or other serious damage. My grading standards are identical to those of Lawrence F. Holdridge, Milt Weiss, Norbeck Peters & Ford, and other well-known USA dealers.
