The mystical sound that Mercury Rev first arrived at in the mid-to-late-'90s, peaking with '98 mercurial 'Deserters Songs', has mellowed out further over the period since, marking out not only as purveyors of their own brand of fantastical Americana but a psychedelic band with a unique dreamlike vision. What's more, 'The Light In You' may be the most arresting work they've managed since the aforesaid masterpiece. The wide-eyed wonder and bold orchestration here are well-placed, as 'The Light In You' arrives rich with cinematic splendour, melodic radiance and gentle melancholy in abundance.
