Sergio Mendes.Unlike vocalist Astrud Gilberto, pianist Sergio Mendes was highly respected as a musician in his native Brazil from the very beginnings of bossa nova in the early '60s. Mendes and his combo, Brasil '66, were also the most Americanized of the Brazilian semi-expatriates who enjoyed stateside success at the height of the bossa nova craze. Brazil '66, which featured gifted singer Lani Hall, could occasionally even sound like a slightly Latin version of the Fifth Dimension-without the soaring strings and deluxe production values.Mendez was a shrewd leader, and he understood that much of '60s pop music was ripe for bossa nova treatment. He successfully covered Beatles tunes several times, with his version of "Fool On The Hill" being a particularly winning example, as well as songs by Simon & Garfunkle, Burt Bacharach, and even Cole Porter-whose "Night And Day" seemed tailor-made for the sensual bossa rhythms. From time to time, Brasil '66 would also introduce the songs of fellow countrymen, such as Jorge Ben's exuberant, "Mais Que Nada," sung in Portuguese.........

1966 war alles noch etwas anders, vielleicht auch leichter? Die Musik, zumindest in der Unterhaltungsbranche, hatte einen lockeren Stil und vornehmlich den Zweck, den Hörer den Alltag vergessen zu lassen. Wenn Ihnen das nun bekannt vorkommt, ist das sicher kein Wunder, denn auch heute sehnt sich der gestreßte Mensch nach Entspannung. Deshalb ist eben auch die sogenannte Easy-Listening-Welle nach wie vor erfolgreich und Sergio Mendes’ LP mit dieser Besetzung markiert die Anfangszeit dieses Genres, bevor es zu Kitsch verkam! Der in den frühen 60er Jahren populäre Latinjazz spiegelt sich auch in dieser Platte wieder, so stammen einige Songs wie das berühmte „Mais Que Nada“ von Jorge Ben oder einige ebenfalls sehr bekannte Stücke aus der Feder von Carlos A. Jobim. Aber auch der Lennon/McCartney-Hit „Daytripper“ oder ein Mancini-Klassiker namens „Slow Hot Wind“ sind hier zu hören, weswegen diese von Herb Alpert produzierte Aufnahme eher auf Unterhaltung ausgerichtet ist. Bruce Botnick hat ein sehr atmosphärisches und warmes Klangbild geschaffen, das zweifellos weit über dem durchschnittlichen Niveau üblicher Latineinspielungen liegt. Nur einen Wermutstropfen besitzt diese LP: Sie ist leider viel zu kurz. Von dieser Art Animation könnte man wesentlich mehr vertragen!................. MADE IN JAPAN ...............
