I've been going thru my massive vinyl record collection this summer and pulling out some LPs that I thought that someone else would want for their collection. I've been collecting records for over 40 years and it's time to pass some of them on to the next generation of collectors.
This week on EBay I am offering up this fantastic, clean copy of the Mobile Fidelity Half-Speed MFSL pressing of Gustav Holst's 'The Planets', performed by the London Symphony Orchestra, Conducted by Sir George Solti. This is an original First Pressing of this legendary MFSL recording from 1979.
This is my original copy that I've taken great care of for many years. Excellent condition. See the full description of the jacket and vinyl condition below.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is a very nice, very clean, original  MSFL "MoFi" pressing of Holst's "The Planets", one of the most popular pieces of Classical music ever recorded.
This is an original 1979 Mobile Fidelity pressing, done WAY before Digital recording and all the Mofi controversy. It is a beautiful ALL ANALOG pressing and sounds fantastic.
This was recorded in 1978 at Kingsway Hall in London. Cut in ANALOG at half-speed from the original stereo master tapes. Pressed on high quality, high definition 'Super Vinyl' in Japan by Victor.
The album has the original MFSL cardboard insert and the album is still in the original MSFL poly sleeve. It does NOT have any of the other paperwork.
The back cover has wonderful detailed liner notes written by the composer's daughter, Imogen.
~~~~~~~~~~~~ Holst's 'The Planets' is timeless music, one of the most popular Classical compositions ever recorded. 'Classic' Classical music.
If you want a great Classical Music album for your collection, this is it. The music covers all different styles and this MoFi pressing has fantastic punch and a wide dynamic range. This is a great album to play to show off your audio system.
If your album collection is mostly Rock and Pop, this is a great Classical album to own. If you only own one or two Classical albums, this should be one of them. The music is terrific, played by one of the best Orchestras in the world and conducted by a master. The music is very recognizable, even if your not a Classical collector. This timeless music was used for many Films and Television shows over the years, including 'Star Wars'.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 'The Planets' is easily the most popular orchestral work ever by an English composer. 'The Planets' is made up of 7 different sections, each one having it's own unique soundscape and atmosphere.
This 1978 all Analog MFSL recording of Holst's The Planets sounds fantastic.
The music just shines on this pressing. Superb dynamics, great soundstage and beautiful detail. On my system, this album sounds exceptional.
'Planets' is a real showpiece for any orchestra. It contains seemingly unlimited tone-colors throughout the 7 movements. This pressing is amazingly powerful with exceptional playing by the London Philharmonic.
This MFSL version has the advantage of clarity and wide-ranging dynamics that the work needs to deliver its full sonic impact. A real knockout from beginning to end.
This pressing has great textural clarity, rhythmic bite, and wide gradations of dynamics, particularly in 'Mars' and at the softer end of 'Neptune'. The sound quality is top notch. Beautifully recorded and technically impeccable.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ GUSTAV HOLST: THE PLANETS
I. Mars, The Bringer Of War II. Venus, The Bringer Of Peace III. Mercury, The Winged Messenger IV. Jupiter, The Bringer Of Jollity V. Saturn, The Bringer Of Old Age VI. Uranus, The Magician VII. Neptune, The Mystic
The different sections, or 'planets', on this recording each have their own unique sound, which makes this album have a powerful musical landscape.
The most popular sections are 'Mars' and 'Jupiter.' Mars has Incredible power. It begins with a snarl and a roar, and is fierce and brutal! It reflects the God of War that the planet was named after.
The highlight, in my opinion, is “Jupiter” which is loud, bold and patriotic.
"Mercury" shows Holst as a master of orchestral color. Neptune is mysteriously dark. Uranus is brisk, fast and pure excitement.
Overall, a fantastic listening experience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This piece is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. They have played this piece many times over the years and some of the best recordings of 'The Planets' have been by this ensemble.
The LSO usually performed at Royal Festival Hall in London, which is ancient and is notorious for it's poor acoustics, at least from a modern perspective. Someone had the insight to record this piece at Kingsway Hall in London instead. That hall had great acoustics and reverberation which really add to the overall quality of this recording.
The LSO knew this piece well and were able to convey all the necessary orchestral colors, details and precision to make yet another fantastic recording.
The LSO gives a dazzling display of orchestral dynamics to this piece. The musicianship is high, and the technique of the players is flawless.
The expertise of the LSO is able to give this work a delicate balance of both complex and refined, loud and soft, low and high, as well give this music the occasionally dissonant details it requires. Their skills really give each 'planet' it's own distinct character, flavor and sound. High quality, intense, beautiful and brilliant music.
This MFSL recording sounds fantastic.
The LSO on this recording are led by Conductor Sir George Solti.
Solti is one of the few conductors who seems able to bring out the best of 'The Planets'. He gives life and texture to this wonderful piece of music.
Solti creates an exciting interpretation and brings out the mystical and intimate details the piece requires. He is also able to bring out the theatrics of the music better than most.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here's a nice summary of this famous piece of music, 'borrowed' from Wikipedia:
The Planets (1914-1916) is a "Suite for Large Orchestra” of seven parts, each musically describing the astrological and mythological associations of the seven planets (Earth is excluded and Pluto wasn't discovered until 1930).
The opening piece, “Mars, the Bringer of War” is a musical description of the War God, its hard rhythmic thrust suggesting a gathering storm. “ Venus, the Bringer of Peace” paints a mystical vision of peace, and “Mercury, the Winged Messenger” follows up with quirky and mysterious tone-colors in a quicksilver scherzo. “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity” is the most famous movement, the heroic elements of the beginning contrasting with the noble hymn of the middle section.
“Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age” was Holst’s favorite movement, and it presents human reactions to the onset of old age. “Uranus, the Magician” uses rambunctious orchestral playing to depict a bumbling sorcerer pulling off one last spell. This leads to the aptly-named “Neptune, the Mystic”, making use of the strange sounds of strings and percussion, fading off into a wordless chorus of women’s voices evaporating into infinite contemplation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ CONDITION:  I tried to show good hi-resolution photos of the cover, labels and vinyl in my pictures.
VINYL: The vinyl looks fantastic. Clean, bright and glossy. No obvious scuffs, scratches or issues.
The Labels are the older style White MoFi labels with black text and the Gold MFSL logo. The labels are clean with no marks. The Spindle holes are very clean, suggesting minimal or very careful play.
As mentioned this Album comes with he original MoFi cardboard protective inner sleeve and its original MoFi poly Bag. NO COA and no other paperwork.
JACKET: The Jacket is in great condition. NO names, marks, writing or signs of prior ownership.  The jacket is structurally fine, no seam splits or significant ringwear. The bottom left corner has minimal bumping, but otherwise the jacket is clean and bright.
Overall a very nice copy of this rare 1979 all Analog MFSL MoFi pressing.
Add this fantastic album to your collection today. It would make a great addition to any Classical vinyl record collection.
