'One Night At Budokan' is a live album by the Michael Schenker Group, originally released in 1982.

The Michael Schenker Group (MSG) is a guitar-oriented hard rock band formed in 1979 by the former Scorpions and UFO guitarist Michael Schenker.

From 1986-1992, the band was known as the McAuley Schenker Group, due to Schenker wanting to split the writing process in half with vocalist Robin McAuley.

It is best described as mostly melodic heavy rock with progressive undertones. Schenker is famous for his half-black, half-white Gibson Flying V, his unorthodox approach to lead guitar and is well known in the neo-classical genre.

180 gram limited edition gatefold blue vinyl reissue.

REVIEW:

The question on the minds of most Michael Schenker fans is usually this -- when will he ever [muzeItalic]finally[/muzeItalic] get his due?

Apparently, the German axeman is practically the Rodney Dangerfield of metal.

He's somehow managed to anchor two of the most important bands in the lineage of the genre and influence everyone from Metallica to Powerman 5000, and yet, while he continues have a rabid fan base writhing away in the shadows and is still widely recognized in countries like Japan where technical prowess is highly prized, he remains relatively unknown to American audiences.

It is perhaps not fair that his clones have outsold him many times over and enjoy popular positions on the mantle place of rock & roll, but then again, if influence translated into acclaim, wouldn't so many countless others from Phil Ochs to Nick Drake or even Big Star be better off as well?

In any case, though Schenker's efforts with UFO will always be the crux of his legacy, the Michael Schenker Group's One Night at Budokan is an excellent starting point for his solo career, because it contains the best tracks from his first two albums and gives him room to shine in the freewheeling atmosphere of a live setting back when he was still in his heyday.

It also showcases the band's best lineup and features none other than legendary metal drummer-for-hire Cozy Powell behind the sticks.

However, as with all things Schenker, the main reason for owning this album to begin with is the brilliant guitar work, and in this, he excels far above and beyond the heads of his various imitators; only Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads could have capably traded licks with him in that day and age.

As for the songs themselves, aside from standout favorites like "Into the Arena," "Are You Ready to Rock," and the UFO classic "Doctor Doctor," everything here is fairly good to average early-'80s metal, but it sometimes comes off as second-hand, discount Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, which is ironic given that both bands practically stole the blueprints for their entire approach from the Scorpions, whose sound, of course, Schenker himself originally helped to create.

Nevertheless, One Night at Budokan is considered a highlight in Schenker's catalog and for the metal community as a whole, so it is definitely required listening for fans and serves as a good sampler for any prospective new Schenker zealots curious to find out what all the hype is about.

Unfortunately, unless millions of people such as these suddenly descend upon it and immediately proclaim Schenker the great, lost Jesus of heavy metal guitar playing, he probably still isn't going to get his day in the sun.

VINYL RECORDS

Vinyl records are able to capture the purest quality of recorded music in true form. This is possible because the initial recording is captured on an analog source (usually tape) for the ultimate in High Fidelity sound, it is then pressed onto virgin vinyl. Analog recordings capture the bottom end (or bass) while adding sweetness to the high end (or treble) better than any digital recording ever could. Analog systems are still commonly used before they are digitally transferred to CD. This means that the sound then is altered in the transfer process when CD's are produced. The word fidelity means accuracy and faithfulness. High Fidelity sound is faithful to the original sound made by the artist, capturing maximum accuracy of what was intended for the listener to hear. Vinyl records capture those sounds for the ultimate High Fidelity listening experience!

180/200 GRAM Vinyl LP

These vinyl records are produced with 180 or 200 grams of high definition premium grade virgin vinyl. This is a higher quality audiophile pressing than the typical vinyl record of 100-120 grams. These limited edition LP's are manufactured with the hi-fi enthusiast in mind. A 180 or 200 gram LP is sometimes also referred to as an audiophile pressing, there is a higher bass response and an even warmer High Fidelity sound. 180 or 200 grams LP's are typically manufactured in limited amounts and are considered collectables, commanding a higher price.

VINYL REISSUES

Typically, a vinyl reissue is a repressing of an original LP, usually extracted from the recording's master-tapes. In some cases, reissues are re-mastered to lower surface noise and improve overall sonics. Reissues help preserve the music of an original recording, especially when original LPs become unavailable or can no longer be found. Reissues can be pressed on a variety of thickness from 150 gram to 200 gram and offer a great opportunity for records collectors to own many classic recordings.
