The music of Mick Softley is very much of a specific time and place (Britain during the 1960s folk boom), and given that he apparently had little interest in commercial success, his recordings are a curious mixture of songs and styles that, at their best, are fascinatingly odd. He is also somewhat of a chimera, sounding at times like Donovan, Bert Jansch, and even Tim Buckley or Harry Nilsson in spots, but he never seems to settle on one voice, which gives all of his albums (save his first, Songs for Swingin' Survivors, which was a straight acoustic folk release) a distinct up and down feel.

His third album, Street Singer, was produced by Tony Cox and featured the Fotheringay rhythm section. Cox's arrangements, which make use of saxophones and harmonium, are carefully appropriate and frequently fascinating, and when Softley is on, he is an extremely gifted and focused performer. Some songs are wonderfully drawn poetic vignettes that would fit easily on any of Donovan's or Jansch's early albums. Highlights include the gentle and sincere "Hope," and "I Seen Good Times, I Seen Bad," which sounds like it could be a Tim Buckley song with its soaring, jazzy lead vocal. Songs like "Shucks Blues" have such a simple, unassuming and goofy glow, that it's impossible not to smile and groove with them.

While I am happy to combine (for example) one or two 7” singles into one package with 12” records, sometimes it isn’t practical (like if you want me to combine one 12” record with three or more 7” records). I do not think that these combinations can be packaged together safely and securely. Therefore these will be invoiced separately as two packages.

I would appreciate payment within seven days of the auction's end. If you want to bid on more of our auctions ending a week later please inform me. I will wait and issue a combined invoice at the close of the second week's auctions.

I am sorry to have to introduce these measures – I always try to be patient and allow buyers to bid on extra auctions and / or delay payment.
