Midnight Sun : Walking Circles 1L/1L 1st Press 1972
This rare and collectable first pressing from the Danish band Midnight Sun plays with great clarity and depth and only very minimal 'background'. Number of clicks? Just one light one on S2! Aside from that the audio is very 'clean' with only a small number of inconsequential light ticks, barely any static and only very minimal distortion.
The laminated cover (designed by the famous Roger Dean) is in excellent condition with only light wear and the Decca inner is again is great shape albeit not the original.
This is also one of the first off the 'printing press' as it has the first B stamper on each side.
MKPS 2024 // 7-LNMG-259-1L / 7-LNMG-260-1L // B 1 / B 1

The audio S2 ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint)
The laminated cover is a very strong Ex
The labels are Near Mint
The inner sleeve is Ex+
Visual description
The vinyl is in excellent condition and still has a very strong glossy sheen with no scratches. There are only some faint hairlines plus one short hairline scuff on the first track of S2 but this has no affect on the superb audio. The run out grooves are very clean and you can easily the matrix info and the JT tax code on each. The blue / black hexagonal MCA labels have no marking or writing and only minimal spindle wear.
Play grading
'Can You Hear The Music Play' plays with very strong audio from the word go. There is perhaps just a minor hint of background static on the opening vocal but it is so quiet and certainly not intrusive. It soon disappears and then plays with superb audio from then onwards. There are no clicks or pops and the mid instrumental is a prime example of the clarity on offer here. Throughout the entire playback I only heard one very light tick, you could easily miss. The final vocal is is faultless and I will grade the intro section as Ex+ and the rest as Mint-
The intro on 'Country Song' plays with sublime clarity and then the first vocal passage is flawless with no interference. The first instrumental section has a 4/5 very light static ticks at the start and then plays with great clarity and depth. The final vocal ends the track with no 'background' and overall Near Mint is deserved.
The guitar intro on 'A La Turca' is nigh on perfect with only a couple of light ticks and there is no let up in quality as the sax comes. The jazzy piano section is stunning with no interference of any kind and then the remainder plays with outstanding clarity and power. I only picked up a couple of mega light ticks. This is Mint- a stunning instrumental.
The gentle piano intro on 'The Way Of Zen' plays beautifully with no intrusion and then the opening vocal has a clarity of sound that can hardly be faulted. Stunning! As the volume increases on the vocal there is barely any inner groove distortion and the mid instrumental has only the lightest of background static here and there. The next vocal plays with great precision and to the end it plays so well with barely any 'background' - in fact the piano fade out plays with stunning clarity. This has to grade as Ex+ at the very least but many sections do play better than that.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
'I've Got A New Mind' on S2 has just one light tick on the intro (a real power and depth here) and then the opening vocal plays with exceptional quality. From then on the audio plays with strong deep audio and the clarity is very impressive, a couple of light ticks that is all. The mid instrumental is stunning and the final vocal keeps up this fine standard with no interference. There is one light click right at the end so I will grade as Near Mint- overall.
The intro on 'Winds Gonna Blow' plays very clearly with only a handful of very light ticks and just a hint of distortion on a small number of notes. The first vocal is close to perfect and it continues to play with very strong audio. There is no interference other than a touch of minimal distortion on the top end on a handful of occasions. In fact the more I listen to it the more I am impressed by it! This distortion is so minimal, hardly intrusive, and the mid instrumental plays with outstanding quality! The end vocal is so clean with only a couple of barely audible ticks and the final section plays with great clarity. I would say this ranges between Ex+ and Near Mint
The quiet intro on 'Walking Circles' is so clean with barely any static and the opening vocal section then plays with impeccable clarity and definition. There is just very minor distortion at the start of the instrumental piece and thereafter plays very clearly with hardly any distortion. The vast majority of this section plays with STUNNING clarity and the next vocal does not disappoint either. The percussive end section plays with great clarity and only a couple of light ticks. Near perfect. Again ranging between Ex+ and Near Mint is a fair assessment of the audio.
The segue into 'I'm Living A Dream' has no 'background' and it then plays with a sonic quality that can hardly be faulted. For a final track the playback is very impressive and there is barely any inner groove distortion. There are no clicks or pops etc and Near Mint- is about right.
In summary this first pressing plays with superb audio for the vast majority with only minimal 'background' and there is certainly nothing that is off-putting shall we say. This is a relatively rare album so to find one as good as this is, well, a rarity! There is just one light click, a small number of light ticks and only very minimal distortion which is not intrusive anyway. I wasn't expecting too much from this album but it proved to be a very enjoyable listen!
The Cover & Inner Sleeve
The laminated cover is in excellent condition with only minimal wear. The edges are perfect with no rubbing and the thin pinched spine is super clean with only a couple of tiny crease lines. What also stands is how clean all of the corners which have barely any wear and the opening edge has no handling wear either. The front cover is in lovely condition with no marking as such just a few crease lines next to the spine (as is common) and a couple of laminate creases near the top edge. The back cover is not laminated and yet remains very clean with no obvious - just very minimal fading around the edges and light marking on the laminate edge on the right side which wraps around from the front. A very impressive example overall.
This can't be the original Decca poly-lined inner as it is dated 7-76 but it is nonetheless in excellent condition with no side splits or tears, no marking and not too much creasing.
