Description

Summer is just about here which means it's time for me to clean out the vaults. Over the next few weeks, I will be listing several rare and one of a kind soul/funk gems as well as some choice cuts from the golden age of hip hop for all the heads out there. I'm going to try to list new records daily so be sure to check out my other auctions. On the menu today...

The Midnighters -- "Volume 2"

This is Hank Ballard & The Midnighters' ultra-rare 1958 LP on King, simply titled "Volume Two" (although I'm not sure if there ever was a volume one). There are two variations of this record: one that was released on Federal and one that was released on King. They are the same album except the Federal LP books for a whopping $1200 according to Goldmine, while the King release goes for around $300. Not too shabby. The record plays beautifully and the first track, the classic double-entendre "Open Up Your Back Door" is worth the price of admission alone. Pretty racy stuff, especially for the Fifties. Hank Ballard was of course a long-time cohort of fellow King label-mate, James Brown. Two-inch crownless King labels. Low reserve.

The sleeve rates VG- with some light ring-wear and taped top and bottom seams. It's a little faded, but there's still a lot of gloss and no serious discolorations. Not the best, but not a total eyesore either. The vinyl is rates VG++ with a full deep sound. There are a couple of marks, but nothing serious. The black King labels have a little spindle wear. .

*Note: The sound samples you hear are from the actual record you are bidding on. No effects have been used to clean up the sound.
