Description

MIKE OLDFIELD PLATINUM Sally quickly withdrawn first pressing A1 No reserve. .  This is the version Virgin Records withdrew upon hearing the track 'Sally' which is a mystery as it has a fine solo from Mike as well as making sense with the running order of side two....anyway it was 41 years ago now and hasn't been made available anywhere since.(Many fans were disappointed it wasn't included in the Deluxe CD Edition Mercury released a few years ago, a missed opportunity). Virgin Records quickly reissued the album in 1979 with 'Into Wonderland' as its replacement track although some sleeves and labels still listed the removed song...which makes this even harder to come across.
I play every record I auction as I'm guessing most people would like to listen to it more than look at it.
Using a Shibata stylus with the treble on full to expose any click, tick etc...
AUDIO GRADING SIDE ONE Airborne - A quiet opening intro on bass , crisp and dynamic but has a clear audible click/scratch that lasts into the band coming in. It's there in varying click levels, sometimes lighter then heavier eventually getting pushed into the back ground when the full band play.It does not stick or skip on my system. I have played it a few times to make sure.  Without this scratch , it would have graded a  VG to VG+ as the music underneath is great, undistorted etc .but it falls into a grading of G-  because of this. Platinum/Charleston/North Star - crisp clean sound grading a strict VG+ to EX- with occasional light surface, click, pop over all very clear sounding on this system.
SIDE TWO Woodhenge - A very quiet piece and as the opening track it's in a vulnerable place. Generally good clear sounding, but has a repeated light to medium tick/click beginning around 9 seconds in for 15 seconds or so more pronounced by around 43 seconds along with some other random clicks scattered occasionally from what I timed it at when playing it for this auction. A strict VG- to be fair but overall a reasonably pleasant listening experience. Sally -   The main attraction and has remained unavailable since it's withdrawal in 1979.  Odd pop, light tick but  a strong VG+ to EX (it's survived very nicely and is a joy to hear) Punkadiddle- nice, clear sounds again from this initial run , a strict EX I Got Rhythm - A quiet introduction to a gentle song showing some light static at the beginning, odd pop , graded a strict EX
VISUAL GRADING OF RECORD Side One As mentioned and clearly seen in the pictures, track one has been marked, scratched and is clearly visible. The rest of side one has some faint hairlines, the odd surface mark, line,. Most records are glossy, this is no exception. Track one grades G-  the rest of the disc is VG to possibly VG+ to be strict (maybe it would reach an EX- to another seller, but I'd prefer to err on the side of caution. General use ,varying surface  marks but in overall shiny condition apart from above details. The label is clean with one light spindle trail and some bubbling of the paper label which is a common sight on some of these albums.
Dead wax is hand etched with the Lyre sign  and the all important V 1241 A1 matrix
Side Two Track one shows hairlines and the aforementioned surface marks, fine surface/scratch lines. The rest of the side is clean, with surface faint lines, general use but generally cared for I'd strictly grade it  between VG to VG+  Again a clean label and with no noticeable spindle.  Dead wax hand etched with the Lyre sign again and the all important V 1241 B 2 matrix (possibly rarer than the B 1 cut but that's up to conjecture)
On the turntable the record is flat.
THE OUTER SLEEVE Very susceptible to creasing, dents, splits, etc due to the printed gloss finish and dark image. Please see pictures for any marks (edge dent/crushing on front opening edge and on the back some surface edge marks along with one thumb dent on the front as pictured. I have tried to picture as much as possible in clear detail. Strict VG
INNER SLEEVE  Good cared for condition, one small split appearing and some slight rubbing from the record edge. Another strict VG maybe better to other sellers .
This sought after edition from one Mike Oldfield's big selling albums is up for auction with no reserve starting at 99p to give people a chance at possibly finally getting hold of this long deleted Oldfield rarity.
It will be safely packaged and sent tracked and signed for.The record will be in its own poly lined inner sleeve and not sent within its original inner bag to protect the item.
