I have researched this record and believe that this is one of the very rare, earliest promotional copies which were pressed privately and financed by Richard Branson.
These were used as promotional copies and only a very small number exist.
Please read the excerpt below for full details:A genuine first pressing of Tubular Bells is among the hardest to find of any of the 'mainstream' prog or rock collectables.
The history of how Richard Branson began his Virgin empire with the release of Tubular Bells is well-known and Tubular Bells is probably one of the most famous LPs ever made. But despite this - or perhaps because of it? - sellers frequently claim later pressings as first issues (and, unfortunately, unsuspecting buyers have often parted with large sums of money for what are simply early second pressings).
The commonly claimed '1st pressing' is an EMI-pressed record with 2U/2U matrixes in a laminated E.J. Day cover. That is, in fact, a second pressing.
The first pressing was not pressed by EMI and it came in a laminated cover printed by Robor which has a 'pinched' spine top and bottom. It was organised by Branson at the Lyntone pressing plant in Holloway, North London. (Although Lyntone is often associated with flexi-discs it was a well-established record pressing plant specialising in short-runs). These original pressings do not have the familiar stamped matrixes, mothers and stampers associated with EMI-pressed records. They have a simple, hand etched matrix number with no number suffix (and no mother or stamper information).
This copy has all the features mentioned above - the cover is printed by Robor and the matrix numbers are etched, not stamped and are just V-2001-A and V-2001-B with no number suffix and no mother or stamper information.
The vinyl looks to be in Very Good condition on side one and Excellent- condition on side two.
The labels are graded as Excellent- condition.
The cover is graded as Excellent- condition.
My LP gradings are based on the UK Record Collector grading system. Please make sure you are familiar with the grading system before you place a bid (please see below for details). Returns cannot be accepted where a buyer has not understood the grading system.
All vinyl is visually graded unless specifically stated otherwise. For some rare records I will take them to a friend who has a working turntable to play them and list them with a play-grading, but please assume that all records are visually graded unless specifically stated otherwise.
My auctions are open to genuine enthusiasts, fans and collectors. I would like my records to go to good homes where they will be appreciated for what they are and not viewed as commodities to buy and sell for profit. Therefore, I would prefer not to receive bids from record dealers. Thank you.
Returns policy I try to describe/grade my items accurately as I do not want them returned. However, if I have made a genuine mistake and the item is SIGNIFICANTLY not as described it can be returned for a refund. Please don't bid if you are a record dealer or someone who will complain over some small issue I have overlooked to try and get a discount - if you are not happy with the item you must send it back. For vinyl that is visually graded I cannot accept returns based on any discrepancy between the vinyl's visual grading and the way it sounds.

P&P in the UK is £4.50 (each additional LP add £1.00)
P&P outside the UK - all items are sent with signed-for delivery (no exceptions, so please don't ask).
Europe = £11.70 (each additional LP add £2.50)
Rest of the World = £15.80 (each additional LP add £3.50)
Items valued over £50 will require insurance at an extra cost of £2.60.
Please make sure that you understand the grading system
MINT: The record looks brand new and has no signs of ever having been played. The cover and packaging look brand new.
NEAR MINT: The record shows minimal signs of having been played, with no marks on the playing surface and perhaps some light spindle trails on the labels. The cover and packaging look almost like new.
EXCELLENT: The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
VERY GOOD: The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
GOOD: The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discolouration, etc.
FAIR: The record is still just playable but has not been cared for properly and displays considerable surface noise; it may even jump. The cover and contents will be torn, stained and / or defaced.
POOR: The record will not play properly due to scratches, bad surface noise, etc. The cover and contents will be badly damaged or partly missing.
BAD: The record is unplayable or might even be broken, and is only of use as a collection filler.
Where an item falls between two grades then plus or minus (+ or -) may be added.
