Mike Westbrook's Metropolis
'S/T'
RCA, UK, 1971
SF 8396
MIKE WESTBROOK fromed one of the greatest British free-jazz units of the early seventies. This is their debut LP featuring the cream of British progressive jazz players at the time including, natch, Alan Skidmore, Harry Beckett, Mike Osborne, Alan Skidmore, Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Malcolm Griffiths and John Marshall, Derek Wadsworth, Gary Boyle, John Marshall and vocalist Norma Winstone: the cream of UK jazz musicians. As you might expect the music is incredibly demanding progressive free-jazz played to an inpeccable level of accomplishment. Boy, these guys were really pushing the envelope - possibly the most complex and yet intoxicating jazz-rock ever recorded.
This auction is part of a fantastic collection of seventies rock which I was lucky enough to acquire. Most of these records were stored with the utmost care and sparsely played. Some were possibly never played or may have been for just a handful of times.
