MILES DAVIS – BOPPING THE BLUES

One of Miles Davis’ earliest recording sessions. The very first known instance of the famed trumpeter playing in an “open” style, and in a band with legendary tenor saxophonist Gene Ammons and drummer Art Blakey. Need any more be said? Very few jazz albums possess more historical import and wow-inspiring significance than Bopping the Blues, which documents a 1946 session in which Davis supported a group and two singers, Earl Coleman and Ann Baker, in a splendid bop affair. Yes, it’s got that elusive Holy Grail quality.

JOHNNY GRIFFIN – THE MAN I LOVE

Johnny Griffin had a reputation as the “world’s fastest tenor.” At this intense live date captured at Club Montmarte in Copenhagen in 1967, the saxophonist lives up to such a billing and more, attacking five compositions with dynamite energy and blinding speed. In addition, Griffin displays the warm and sensitive side he developed later in his career on a touching rendition of Duke Ellington’s “Sophisticated Lady.” Throughout, he’s aided by a resolutely controlled and superbly dynamic rhythm section comprised of bassist Niels Pederson and drummer Albert “Tootie” Heath, who, with pianist Kenny Drew, match Griffin’s red-hot bravado. This is a hard bop set no one will want to be without. Originally released by the UK label Black Lion, The Man I Love is on par with Griffin’s finest studio outings for Blue Note.

DEXTER GORDON – BOTH SIDES OF MIDNIGHT

Dexter Gordon recorded dozens of albums and played hundreds of live shows, but none better what’s captured on this 1967 date from a club date in Copenhagen. The hard-bop saxophonist blows nothing less than a 28-chorus solo without referencing one standard tune on an epic 12-bar rendition of “Sonnymoon for Two” and, for good measure, sails through an extended, calypso-themed version of Ben Tucker’s “Devilette.” Want sentimentality? No problem. Get lost on “Misty,” on which pianist Kenny Drew and drummer Al Heath add their own signature strokes. What a set! Originally released by the UK label Black Lion, Both Sides of Midnight marks Gordon’s peak live recorded document.
