THIS IS A PRECIOUS AND VERY WELL LOOKED AFTER ISSUE THAT WILL BE OF INTEREST TO SERIOUS COLLECTORS

SINGLE LETTER MARTIX ENDING IN “E” AND “K”!   EXTREMELY RARE!

DESCRIPTION 

Cover: EX +. Amazing condition. Front cover is in near perfect condition, same for the spine. Back cover has some discoloration against white backdrop due to storage. Seems are nice and intact. Perfectly solid, hardly any wear.

Labels: Side 1 is EX. It has a few marks under “Fidelity”. Only two spindle marks can be seen under close inspection. Side 2 is EX +. As you can see in the photographs, it is as good as one could hope for, no visible spindle marks. Amazing for a record that is 56 years old.

Record is a VG + and this is a conservative rating. Both sides have a few light surface scratches that cause crackling and occasional light tics. The record has been play-tested and the sound is rich and warm. The surface looks great, rare to find first issues in this condition.

Inner Sleeve: Original plastic bag that came with the record. Also included is a paper sleeve.

 HOW TO RECOGNIZE AN AUTHENTIC FIRST PRESSING

1) B-Side Label Showing Wrong Track Sequence (Flamenco Sketches First, All Blues Second).

2) Deep Groove Pressing

3) Original Cover with Cannonball Adderley’s name misspelled

4) Uncorrected Speed Pitch

5) Matrix Number (XSM 47326/47327) in Trail-Off Dead Wax Ends with “1”

6) The number, which appears on the bottom right hand corner of the back cover, appears hand-printed, usually 2 or 4. If this number is machine-printed, it is not an original issue.

MOST IMPORTANT ARE THESE DETAILS

7) Original very first pressings do not have CBS Logos on top of the record label. If you see the CBS Logo, you are looking at a 1961 or 1962 issue that is not a Deep-Groove issue, irrespective of the matrix number. Google search: “Columbia US Jazz labels” for useful explanation.

8) Very First pressings have single letter lacquer cuttings. This issue has lacquer cuttings that end with “E” and “K” – THIS IS EXTREMELY RARE!!! This means that it is the 5th and 10th lacquer cutting respectively.

The #1 at the end of the matrix number indicates the first tape or mix used, while the letters indicate the lacquer cutting. Apparently, Columbia used only the letters A-L, excluding I to give the following sequence:

A – 1st cutting

B – 2nd cutting

C – 3rd cutting

D – 4th cutting

E – 5th cutting

F – 6th cutting

G – 7th cutting

H – 8th cutting

J – 9th cutting

K – 10th cutting

L – 11th cutting

AA – 12th cutting and so on…

BL – 33th cutting, etc…
