Water Babies is a fascinating compilation released in 1976, featuring recordings from Davis’ transitional period between 1967 and 1968. The album bridges his Second Great Quintet’s acoustic mastery and his exploration of electric jazz fusion. Tracks like “Water Babies” and “Capricorn” highlight the quintet’s experimentation with freer structures and tonal shifts, showcasing the evolving interplay between Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams.


Fun Fact: The track “Sweet Pea” was recorded during the same sessions as Wayne Shorter’s Nefertiti, but it remained unreleased until Water Babies came out, giving fans a hidden gem from one of Davis’ most innovative periods.
