IN ADDITION, WE WILL NEVER WEIGH OUR BLUE NOTE (OR ANY OTHER) RECORDS FOR NANOGRAM WEIGHT VARIANCES, AND WE WILL NEVER USE RADIOACTIVE CARBON DATING TO DETERMINE THE AGE AND GENERATION OF OUR BLUE NOTE VINYL. THE EPHEMERAL BLUE NOTE PRESSING MARKS, SUCH AS PLASTYLITE STAMPS, FLAT EDGES, DEEP GROOVES AND SIMILAR ESOTERIC ARCANA - ALTHOUGH THEY WILL BE SPECIFICALLY MENTIONED IN OUR LISTINGS AS BEING PRESENT OR ABSENT - ARE OF NO (ZERO, NULL, NONE) SIGNIFICANCE TO THIS SELLER EITHER HISTORICALLY, TECHNICALLY, PHILOSOPHICALLY, AESTHETICALLY, ACOUSTICALLY OR ARTISTICALLY AND ARE MENTIONED IN OUR LISTINGS FOR REFERENCE PURPOSES ONLY. WE CONSIDER THE RECORD LABELS - AND LABELS ALONE - TO BE THE ONLY MERITORIOUS STANDARD FOR DETERMINING THE GENERATION OF THE PRESSING - BLUE NOTE OR OTHERWISE - AND WE SEE ABSOLUTELY NO LEGITIMATE REASONS WHY PRESSING CRITERIA FOR BLUE NOTE TITLES SHOULD BE ANY DIFFERENT FROM THOSE APPLICABLE TO 99.9999% OF ALL OTHER AMERICAN RECORDS PRODUCED SINCE 1949. THEREFORE, PLEASE CONSIDER YOURSELVES DULY AND PROPERLY CAUTIONED: OUR DEFINITION OF THE FIRST BLUE NOTE PRESSING MAY SIGNIFICANTLY DIFFER FROM YOURS. This album contains all of the music recorded by a particularly strong sextet in 1952 and 1953, six selections and five alternate takes (some recorded in 1954). With trumpeter Miles Davis, trombonist J.J. Johnson, tenor saxophonist Jimmy Heath, pianist Gil Coggins, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Art Blakey all in fine form, "Tempus Fugit" and "C.T.A." receive definitive treatment along with two Johnson compositions.
The 1952 and 1953 sessions were recorded almost a year apart by Doug Hawkins at WOR Studios, 1440 Broadway in Manhattan.
For his first Blue Note session, Miles brought along altoist Jackie McLean (just a few days shy of his 21st birthday) as well as pianist Gil Coggins. Both Coggins and McLean were part of the band with which Miles had just wrapped up a week-long engagement at Birdland. Coggins (who left music permanently not long after these sessions to pursue a career in real estate) and trombonist J.J. Johnson are heard on both of the WOR sessions. The rhythm section is rounded out by Oscar Pettiford and the godfather of bop drumming, Kenny Clarke.
The 1953 session substitutes Jimmy Heath on tenor joined by his brother Percy on bass and Art Blakey on the drums.
The bulk of these two sessions make up the material on “Miles Davis Volume 1”. Side 1 consists largely of tunes from the ‘53 session with all but one track on side 2 being drawn from the ‘52 session.
The 1954 session is different in several ways:
By 1954, Alfred Lion was relying on the services of Dr. Rudy Van Gelder, an optometrist located in the suburb of Hackensack, NJ. Van Gelder was moonlighting as a recording engineer in a home studio built into his parents living room especially for this purpose. Miles’ final Blue Note session (he had now signed an exclusive contract with Bob Weinstock’s Prestige label) was also among Van Gelder’s earliest for Alfred Lion.
Van Gelder would record and personally cut the masters for almost the entirety of the Blue Note catalog up until Lion’s departure in 1967 (Van Gelder also remastered the ‘52 and ‘53 recordings and cut the masters for these LPs).
Perhaps more importantly, at the beginning of 1954, Miles had locked himself in a hotel room in Detroit for twelve days and finally emerged free of the heroin addiction which had been plaguing him throughout the early 1950s and slowly destroying his hitherto promising career. Like so many of his contemporaries in the bop scene, Miles had picked up a habit in 1949 and despite being arrested for “internal possession” in L.A. in 1950 and forcibly going cold turkey after being locked in a jail cell by the local sheriff at the behest of his father not long after the ‘52 Blue Note session, Miles had continued his downward spiral.
Miles’ mentor and idol, Charlie Parker, would sucuomb to his addictions just a year later in 1955 at the age of 34.
The ‘54 session is also distinct in that it’s a quartet date featuring Miles as the sole horn. While Percy Heath and Blakey are held over from the ‘53 session, but this marks Horace Silver’s first appearance with Miles Davis. Silver and Blakey would go on to form the the seminal Hard Bop ensemble, Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers.
Fittingly, the final track, “It Never Entered My Mind”- a Rodgers & Hart tune- features one of Miles’ earliest usages of the Harmon mute which would go on to become his trademark. Miles would subsequently re-record this tune twice more in 1956, first with Sonny Rollins and Tommy Flanagan and finally with Miles Davis Quintet, The.

· CONDITION:
· THE RECORD
(IMPORTANT NOTE: unless otherwise noted, ALL records are graded visually, and NOT play-graded!; we grade records under the strong, diffuse room light or discrete sunlight)
(a) WE GRADE THE VINYL AS STRONG VG++. A few light abrasions ARE VISIBLE, but they appear fairly insignificant relative to the overall condition of the vinyl, and are only moderately visually distracting. For most part, the vinyl looks impeccable, without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.
(b) The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings)
(c) The record has a ►Rudy Van Gelder name, or his initials (RVG) stamped or hand-etched in the trail-off vinyl (dead wax). On SOME Jazz labels (Blue Note, Savoy, Regent, Prestige, Impulse, Verve…) this stamp signifies highly professional masterings either done by - or personally authorized by - the legendary engineer himself.
(d) The record has an "ear" symbol (a pretzel-like engravure about 1/4-inch/6mm long) in the trail-off vinyl, which on SOME jazz and blues labels (such as Blue Note; Folkways; Period, etc…) is associated with very early or first pressings). The 'ear' symbol is actually a letter 'P' in italic script, denoting a pressing made by Plastilite Corporation’s pressing plant.
(e) The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!
(f) Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.
(g) True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.
(h) Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
· THE COVER
THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD++ (VG++).
The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:
- Cover has a partially split top seam (between 2 and 4 inches / 5 to 10 centimeters); This split seam was delicately taped by the previous owner with a piece of transparent scotch tape
- Cover has some light ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and 10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 2 (front side) and 3 (back side)
- Back cover has circular tarnish (grayish, dust-covered sections, which closely follow the contour of the record), probably caused by friction or by rubbing against other covers during the storage. The tarnish is similar in appearance to a common ring wear, but, UNLIKE ring wear, these grayish areas may be possible to clean up with a minor effort and with a right cleansing solution.
- Cover shows some light yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging (nothing significant)
- Minor shelf wear noted on the seams (nothing significant)
- Cover has one corner slightly worn (nothing significant)
- Cover has a few tiny wrinkles along the spine (nothing significant)
NO OTHER VISIBLE FLAWS OR IMPERFECTIONS ON THE COVER
