Original USA first pressing - Deep Groove yellow/black label, with "RVG" in trailoff groove and W. 50th St. NYC address!
Five tracks, with John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, Red Garland, Philly Joe Jones.
Cover is in truly EXCELLENT condition!
Heavyweight cover is fully laminated on the front with no peeling and only very light wear!!
A beautiful piece of art on its own merits.
Stiff, heavyweight vinyl is in VG++ condition with light surface scratches.
The album plays with pops and clicks on Side 1 and light surface noise with occasional clicks on Side 2. Rudy Van Gelder's mastering is typically stellar on this album!
Great condition overall for this classic from more than 1/2 century ago!
Cookin' is the first of four albums derived from the Miles Davis quintet's fabled extended recording session on October 26, 1956; the concept being that the band would document their vast, live-performance catalog in a studio environment, rather than preparing all new tracks for their upcoming long-player. The bounty of material in the band's live sets -- as well as the overwhelming conviction in the quintet's studio sides -- would produce the lion's share of the Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin' albums. As these recordings demonstrate, there is an undeniable telepathic cohesion that allows this band -- consisting of Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax), Red Garland (piano), and Philly Joe Jones (drums) -- to work so efficiently both on the stage as well as in the studio. This same unifying force is also undoubtedly responsible for the extrasensory dimensions scattered throughout these recordings. The immediate yet somewhat understated ability of each musician to react with the ingenuity and precision is expressed in the consistency and singularity of each solo as it is maintained from one musician to the next without the slightest deviation. "Blues by Five" reveals the exceptional symmetry between Davis andColtrane that allows them to complete each other's thoughts musically. Cookin' features the pairing of "Tune Up/When Lights Are Low" which is, without a doubt, a highlight not only of this mammoth session, but also the entire tenure of Miles Davis mid-'50s quintet. All the elements converge upon this fundamentally swinging medley. Davis' pure-toned solos, and the conversational banter that occurs with Coltrane, and later Garland during "When the Lights Are Low," resounds as some of the finest moments between these musicians. -- All Music Guide

RECORD GRADING POLICY
MINT = like new or near new with only one or two small insignificant defects, a 9 or better on a 1-10 scale
EXCELLENT = Would be Near Mint, except for a couple of light hairlines or scuffs, which do not affect play
VG++ = still a very nice record with all or nearly all of its original gloss but may have a few more light, surface marks, hairlines, needle tracks or the like which should not materially affect play
VG+ = a nice, but used record that may have a series of light scuffs or scratches. It probably plays with a few pops, but has no serious problems.
VG = a well-used record that still should sound OK when played, but may have moderate surface noise, pops, etc.
VG- = a very well-worn record that plays through without skipping, but will do until a better copy comes along.
Good = not actually good at all but probably will play through but with much in the way of surface noise, pops, crackles, etc. Still, will have no cracks, chips or the like
Fair = you are getting this record just to own but not to play
Poor = the sky's the limit, generally I will discard a record this bad (and sell the cover, jacket or sleeve alone) unless the label holds some particular interest
