Ilhan Mimaroglu “Electronic Music For Jean Dubuffet’s Coucou Bazar” LP issued by Mimaroglu on his Finnadar Records (SR 9003) in USA, 1973. ****** Rec:ex / Cov:ex ****** Ilhan Mimaroglu “Electronic Music For Jean Dubuffet’s Coucou Bazar” was published specifically to be a musical illustration to Jean Dubuffet's painting, "Coucou Bazar", which opened at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City on May 16, 1973. The album was recorded at the studios of Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Centre. This LP uses a unique approach with a specific sort of musical painting with sounds. These sounds are like babbling, deformed talk, watery movements, funny percussive sounds, which all become like language-like/based sections, including some being slowed down or speeded up talks-like electronics. It has (especially on track 4) perhaps something of the music (or language) performed, but now enriched with more means, by The Clangers, who talk with its moving pipe flutes. Further more are heard certain “talks” with clarinet or guitar, oddly trembling sounds, all vividly moving in itself and full of life, wobbling, a kind of DJ scratching sounds, or sounds like being played by loose strings, or the kind of sounds that can be heard via percussion upon a bottle of water that moves around. In a way, all these sound change shape rapidly in itself, like circular, and never like “straight” sounds, which is what makes them playing together to something of a unique and joyful world, like the expression of a feast with strange figures, just like “Coucou Bazar” could be interpreted, which is a 3D bazar of sculptures, here this is being described in movement. Besides, in “Coucou Bazar” were moving sculptures too, with actors dressed just like Dubuffet’s paintings. The last, and kind of bonus track let us hear Jean Dubuffet reading his (French) poem of the same title, recorded in multiple overdubs. It is spoken word with overlappings and almost announcing theatrical expressions. Pure musically it is repetitive, but it still is a poem, a wordy expression mostly, like as if it is simply made for the announcement of a play. But Jean Dubuffet made music himself too. His own record was released in a very limited edition once. Dubuffet was a great fan of Art Brut, art produced by people who were detached from current society and who landed up in psychiatry. In that way he also loved the art of Adolf Wölfli. Just like the art of retarded people, these expressions can be refreshing and new, because it is detached by conventional standards, so if it really succeeded in fulfilling it’s own needs, it also is an honest expression, which might be more of a reality than what the conditioned mind conceives. Dubuffet was one of the first to consider this as real art, while psychiatrists saw this until that day only as a by-product of people’s illnesses, even when it was merely caused by a detachment. Like Dubuffet’s interest in art brut, it lives up to its goals: to make real music by simply listening to the sounds he is able to produce or by simply making it. ****** Record looks unplayed.
