MINOR THREAT - THE HOLY GRAIL! Description:

I am going to try this auction again after a couple of non-paying bidders. Please only bid if you are serious about bidding on these rare records.

Now here's something that I again think you will NEVER, EVER, EVER see come up for auction on Ebay ever again. This is a KBD collector's wet dream!

What I am offering for auction are all four original editions of the first and legendary classic Minor Threat single at the same time! These are not repressings, but the original Dischord Records releases of the single that was heard around the world. The red sleeve, the yellow sleeve, the blue sleeve and the green sleeve. I forget the order, but I do know that the red one was first. I was there and bought all of these when they were originally released. The songs are as you know the best hardcore punk songs ever recorded and released and here is your opportunity to get them all at once. Every single song is one that you know every single lyric. If this record was released this year the songs would be top ten hits. This record is just that good! The guitar, drums, bass and Ian's voice combined to produce a sound that is unmistakably Minor Threat. Nothing even compares in the world of hardcore. Nothing can come close to the greatness that was Minor Threat. So here's your chance to be a collector overnight. There just aren't any better KBD items on Ebay this year like this one I am offering right now.

If you are looking at this auction, you know what you are after so I'll take a moment to talk about the condition of all of them. I don't have a record player any longer so I can't play these to tell you exactly how they sound. These are being sold as is and you'll have to ask questions because there are NO RETURNS! These are as is and I'm going to try to be as specific as I can about the condition. If you are a condition whore and you only want records that look as though they just were fresh off the pressing plant then these will not be for you and please don't waste my time. They do have some wear as I'll describe below. If you look at the pictures you'll see they are in quite good condition. The sleeves are all intact and not ripped or otherwise messed up. Same goes for the vinyl. I'll be as specific as I can to describe how the vinyl looks. All that being said these four are not in completely mint condition, but I'd say they are in very good shape for what I have seen out there and for you to be able to get them all in one clean, clear swoop is totally and completely an unusual situation.

First, I have to say, to anyone who asks: NO I WILL NOT SPLIT THESE UP INDIVIDUALLY! If you only need the blue or green sleeves to fill out your collection, well just buy them all and then resell them to some other lucky soul.

The Red Cover: Some wear to the corners of the sleeve. Cardstock sleeve is not split on the sides like many of these. Vinyl is in good condition given the number of times it was probably played. Yellow label on the record. I can see some minor surface markings and there is probably some wear when you play this one as a result. No skips of course, but it was defintely played unlike many of of other records. Comes with original lyric sheet with some minor staining to the top (see picture).

The Green Cover: Some standard wear to the corners of the cardstock sleeve. Not pristine, but pretty good all the same. No splitting to the sides. Vinyl appears fairly clean with a few markings. It appears as though it was played lightly. Silver label. Lyric sheet was obviously hung on the wall at some point as there is tape residue on top and bottom of the sheet, but it's too be expected. Who didn't post the lyric sheet to this record to their bedroom wall!

The Blue Cover: This is the best overall condition vinyl wise of the lot. Vinyl appears unplayed. Mint condition. I never played this one. No lyric sheet. Sleeve is in great condition. Silver label. The cardstock sleeve is tight, but it is split on the sides where the glue was originally affixed. It could easily be reglued and no one would ever know the difference, but that's up to you. The glue after 25 years is no longer effective. But here's the interesting thing: on the ride side of the sleeve where it would have been glued are the words "Flex Your Head". I think that's worth checking out so I never reglued it when it came undone.

The Yellow Cover: Good condition with a light more paperlike sleeve. Some lower left corner wear. These sleeves are all in generally good condition. I'm not an expert grader. It either looks good or it doesn't. The vinyl appears quite clean. I don't remember ever playing this one either. There is no lyric sheet. Light blue record label. Sleeve is of the lightest paper stock of the four records.

Biography

Minor Threat was the definitive Washington, D.C., hardcore punk band, setting the style for the straight-edge punk movement of the early '80s. Led by vocalist Ian MacKaye, the band was staunchly independent and fiercely sober. Through their songs, the group rejected drugs and alcohol, espoused anti-establishment politics, and led a call for self-awareness. Every song was fast, sharp, and lethal, often clocking in at just around a minute. Their speed and fury often hid their fairly catchy melodies, but the band's main function was to vent rage. Over the course of three years, Minor Threat released two EPs, one album, and several singles, all of which were quite popular in the American punk underground. Their records and concerts helped spawn straight-edge, an American punk lifestyle based on the group's intense, clean-living ideology. Following the disbandment of Minor Threat, MacKaye formed Fugazi, who became one of the more popular American indie rock bands of the late '80s and '90s.

The origins of Minor Threat lie in the Teen Idles, Ian MacKaye's first band. MacKaye formed the Teen Idles while he was attending Wilson High School in Washington, D.C., and after he graduated in 1980, he founded the Dischord record label with the intent of putting out his group's records through the label. Shortly after graduation, the Teen Idles had broken up and MacKaye had formed Minor Threat with former Idles drummer Jeff Nelson, former Government Issue bassist Brian Baker, and guitarist Lyle Preslar. By the end of the year, Minor Threat had released the singles "Minor Threat" and "Straight Edge," and had played many concerts along the East Coast. Throughout 1981, they followed this same pattern, playing a lot of concerts and releasing 7" singles. That year, they also released two EPs, Minor Threat and In My Eyes, both of which compiled their singles.

In 1982, bassist Baker had left and was replaced by Steve Hansen; Baker later played with the Meatmen, Junkyard, and Dag Nasty. With Hansen on board, the group recorded their only full-length album, Out of Step. Upon its 1983 release, the album became popular within the underground and Minor Threat were becoming alternative stars, which didn't sit well with MacKaye. By the end of the year, he broke up the band. MacKaye and Nelson continued to run Dischord, which thrived well into the '90s. The pair also played together in another band, Egg Hunt. Following the disbandment of Egg Hunt, Nelson played with a variety of bands -- including Three and Senator Flux -- before devoting his energies to running Dischord. MacKaye played with Embrace, Skewbald, and Pailhead before forming Fugazi, who carried on the aesthetic, if not the sound, of Minor Threat.

Nike Pulls Major Threat Ad, Issues Apology

On Thursday, we reported that Nike Skateboarding used a classic Minor Threat album cover for its "Major Threat" 2005 East Coast Tour posters without asking permission. Much had been heard from the justifiably angry Dischord Records camp, including former Minor Threat frontman and label co-founder Ian MacKaye, who expressed his outrage towards the sneaker conglomerate. Nike had remained oddly silent until yesterday, when it issued a formal apology to both Dischord and Minor Threat.

In its letter of mea culpa, Nike Skateboarding states, "Because of the album's strong imagery, and because our East Coast tour ends in Washington DC, we felt it was a perfect fit. This was a poor judgment call and should not have been executed without consulting Minor Threat and Dischord Records." The letter also says that the advertising agencies Wieden & Kennedy and Odopod should not share blame for the poster image. Furthermore, Nike Skateboarding has removed all print and digital flyers for the tour bearing the Minor Threat image.

In an attempt to make peace with the legendary hardcore band, the letter extends this olive branch: "All of the Nike employees responsible for the creation of the tour flyer are fans of both Minor Threat and Dischord records [sic] and have nothing but respect for both." See guys, it was a case of idol worship gone terribly wrong! Nike is totally down with underground music and skate culture.

It is unclear whether Dischord will pursue future action against Nike. No responses to the letter have been made by MacKaye or anyone else at Dischord.

Nike Skateboarding sincerely apologizes for the creation of a tour poster inspired by Minor Threat's album cover. Despite rumors being circulated, Wieden & Kennedy and Odopod had nothing to do with the creation of this tour poster and should not be held accountable. To set the record straight, Nike Skateboarding's "Major Threat" Tour poster was designed, executed and promoted by skateboarders, for skateboarders. All of Nike employees responsible for the creation of the tour flyer are fans of both Minor Threat and Dischord Records and have nothing but respect for both.

Minor Threat's music and iconographic album cover have been an inspiration to countless skateboarders since the album came out in 1984. And for members of the Nike Skateboarding staff, this is no different. Because of the album's strong imagery and because our East Coast tour ends in Washington, DC, we felt that it was a perfect fit. This was a poor judgment call and should not have been executed without consulting Minor Threat and Dischord Records.

We apologize for any problems this may have caused, and want to make very clear that we have no relationship with the members of Minor Threat, Dischord Records and they have not endorsed our products.

Every effort has been made to remove and dispose of all flyers (both print and digital). Again, Nike Skateboarding sincerely apologizes to Minor Threat and Dischord Records.
