Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. Original 1972 first pressing in thick gatefold cover of the legendary classic second Little Feat album ... a very rewarding and rich listening experience that keeps on growing with each listen...
Building on the brilliant musicianship of their excellent debut, Little Feat released their sophomore effort, "Sailin' Shoes," one of their finest efforts ever. A tightly constructed release with not a bum track in sight, "Sailin' Shoes" is an even better album than their debut partly because of the more relaxed nature that was on hand after the critical acclaim that was awarded "Little Feat." In this package, the Feat outdid themselves with a reworking of Lowell George's truck driving ballad "Willin'" and they also put down "Trouble," one of their best ballads ever. Also in the selection are the clever "Texas Rose Cafe (one of our favorites)," the concert staple title track and the radio hit "Easy To Slip." Alas, despite the strong critical acclaim, the poor sales contributed to one of the many Feat breakups and bassist Roy Estrada went back to the Mothers of Invention and then to Captain Beefheart's Magic Band. Remaining members Lowell George, Richie Hayward and Bill Payne pressed on... Little Feat's self titled debut promised much and on the bands follow up the charmingly titled "Sailin Shoes" they more than fulfilled their potential, whilst the debut had been a wonderfully bright, inventive blues rock offering "Sailin Shoes" sees the band expand their sound and influences, skipping across genres with effortless ease, if the debut had suffered from the odd misstep then the follow up is marred by no such faults, it's as nigh on perfect as 70's rock music has to offer.Kicking off with George's attempt to write a poprock single "Easy To Slip" is a wonderfully stoned, abstract, melodically inventive piece of California poprock and as such completely failed to give the Feats their much desired breakthrough into the pop market, far too witty, far too trippy and far too surreal for the tastes of most Americans in 1972 it remains a superbly off kilter yet catchy opener. George follows it with the surreal blues of Cold, Cold, Cold a stonewall Feat classic, lyrically as bizarre and innovative as anything George was ever to write it also benefits greatly from some incredibly inventive slide playing, unlike most blues toons of the period George's penchant for unusual chord and time changes makes Little Feat's blues seem less like the faux posturing of the likes of Ten Years After, Clapton and even the Stones, instead what we get is a surrealist, almost cartoonish approximation of the blues, perfectly befitting of the madness of the times (remember Nixon was in the Whitehouse).
After the one two punch of the two opening tracks it seems apt that the pace is brought down and this is done with ease thanks to the superb "Trouble" a countryish acoustic ditty which recalls the superb ballads that graced the Feats' debut, the addition of an accordian is a masterstroke and George delivers another of his heartbreaking vocal performances but it's far from doom and gloom, indeed "Trouble" contains some of George's funniest, surrealist lyrics yet, giving the song an extra layer of charm, who else in 1972 was writing lines like:
"You yelled hey when the stove blew up,
Upset? Why yes,
And the footprints on your ceiling they're almost gone."
"Trouble" is followed by the equally superb rock 'n' roll of "Tripe Face Boogie", written by Billy Payne and Ritchie Hayward in the style of Lowell and sung with effortless ease by George himself, who also contributes some exceptional slide work again, "Tripe Face Boogie" is another stonewall Feats classic as is the following "Willin", already recorded for their debut, where that version was stark and lonesome this re-imagining is much more in keeping with "Sailin Shoes" cartoonish feel, Billy Payne adds some wonderful country piano and George delivers another master class in slide playing and emotive vocals.
"A Apolitical Blues" is another joyous, childlike, playful, off kilter blues tune in the style of Cold, Cold, Cold this time throwing a bluesy harmonica into the mix, thankfully in an age of political sloganizing George nails his apathy to the mast, for all his surrealism and talk of "cartoon consciousness" Lowell remains one of the least pretentious frontmen in rock music. The title track returns to the country blues feel of the earlier "Trouble", going toe to toe with that tune both lyrically and musically, i probably prefer the marvelous "Trouble" but that's not to detract from "Sailin Shoes" own majesty. "Teenage Nervous Breakdown" is straight ahead rock 'n' roll but as usual the Feats can't fail to mess with the formula.
On an album dominated by the maverick genius that was Lowell George it's easy to dismiss the efforts of the other Feat's, Ritchie Hayward remains one of rock music's most inventive, funky drummers and "Sailin' Shoes" is an apt showcase for his talents, Roy Estrada's Bass is funky, always interesting yet never obtrusive and Billy Payne's keyboards (mainly piano, electric piano and organ) are as consistently brilliant as ever and do as much as George's vocals and slide to color Little Feat's ever expanding palette, Bill also contributes two truly great Little Feat tunes "Got No Shadow" and "Cat Fever", the former is a rare early foray into Jazz and unlike later transgressions in that particular genre, here things are kept tight and relatively improv free and the band sounds superb, Hayward's drumming in particular is a joy to behold, the latter is a slide drenched, piano led cartoon blues, Payne's piano and George's guitar play off each other like a pair of proud felines and Billy's voice is perfectly suited to the languid, stalking feel of the song.
"Sailin Shoes" closes with arguably the Feats most experimental, Beefheartian work to date, the daunting, abstract "Texas Rose Cafe", starting with the cartoony, languid blues feel that has dominated large parts of the album it gives way to a jazzy, avant garde midsection that immediately throws the listener off guard before returning to the blues formula of the first section and ending with one of the most abstract, lyrically playful finale's one is ever likely to hear, it's an aptly surrealistic end to the surrealistic masterpiece that is "Sailin' Shoes". From here on in the Feats would reconstruct their line up and get seriously funky, ditching much of the blues along the way and fine albums though "Dixie Chicken" and "Feats Don't Fail Me Now" are they would never surpass the joyful, childlike lunacy that is found on "Sailin' Shoes", the finest album by one of America's finest bands.
