Please keep in mind, we would prefer to continue to provide you the opportunity to acquire the rare music we present each and every week. Payment is required within seven days. We mail all paid items ONE WEEK after auctions end. STILL IN SHRINK WRAPPER !
Given its source, KIND OF A DRAG was one of the most extraordinary albums of the 1960s. One expected great, diverse LPs out of the likes of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, among others; by contrast, even the better albums by top garage-punk outfits such as the 13th Floor Elevators generally had a one-note feel to them, or were conspicuously strong in one direction.
So when a Chicago-based garage band (or were they a garage band?) like the Buckinghams, with one serious hit (Kind Of A Drag) to their name, put out a long-player that embraced soul, blues, garage punk, and English pop-rock with just about equal IMPACT, it must have caught purchasers, radio programmers, and music writers alike totally off guard. Kind Of A Drag isn't the kind of searing punk document that their Windy City rivals the Shadows of Knight presented with their two LPs -- the latter group's work stood next to the Buckinghams roughly where the Who's albums did next to those of the Beatles.
The Buckinghams' lean, guitar-driven garage punk versions of "Sweets for My Sweet" (a cover of the Searchers' version, not the Drifters') and the Hollies' "I've Been Wrong" are mixed with backing arrangements similar to version of the Beatles' "I Call Your Name" -- on which the lead guitar is playing what sound almost like mandolin riffs; and all are sandwiched between the winds-driven "I'll Go Crazy" with some twists that are all the Buckinghams' own.
This is a great album, full of terrific pop, R&B, rock ‘n’ roll, sounding like the Kinks on Don’t Want to Cry. They get funky with great bluesy jazz organ on Virginia Woolf. The arrangements, rhythm section and vocals are all first rate. It’s a shame they couldn’t keep the momentum going. They had the makings of a super group, which they became if only in pop sensibilities
This is a keeper copy based on the MINTY CLEAN condition in shrink wrap from 57 years upon a time
Original 1966 U.S.A. first pressing in bold MONO ...the mono format contains a bold beefy punch that suits the overall sound of the music within so greatly....
This is a very surprising 1st LP by Chicago's BUCKINGHAMS and sounds nothing like the hits machine they became, rather a high energy teen scene garage-rock crew who lay out a impressive 2 full sides that caps off with their massive "Kind Of A Drag" which put them on the road to fame & fortune...
The Buckinghams first LP is unlike anything they would ever record again. Sure, the title track was a killer top 10 smash but the rest of the LP is given over to garage, blue-eyed soul, blues, and British Invasion influenced raw rock. It’s all good too, sung beautifully and played very tightly. You’ll be surprised when you put this gem on the turntable, if only for the two masterful garage punkers from the group’s USA tenure, “Don’t Want To Cry” and “I’ve Been Wrong.” These two tracks alone make Kind of a Drag worth a purchase.
“Sweets For My Sweet” is also given a nice garage pop reading with it’s raw guitar work and smooth organ sounds.
Other standouts: the garage pop of “Makin’ Up & Breakin’ Up,” a superb blue-eyed soul song titled “Love Ain’t Enough” and “Beginners’ Love,” great Beatles inspired rock n roll. Even the album’s “Virginia Wolf,” is skillfully performed, in fact the whole album is very engaging, lacking any weak spots or noticeable mistakes. There’s lots of energy, thought and professionalism put into this music – these guys must have been one hell of a club band back in the day. The youthful energy in the playing and the Buckingham’s willingness to tackle different musical genres is what makes this LP so exciting – a must if you’re into garage-rock. The Yardbirds, the Kinks, and the Who were strong influences on the early Buckinghams as they had yet to fall into the radio pop-perfection hit-making trap that was to come.
