Please keep in mind our listings are time consuming in detail and we are often traveling to find these gems, which at times delays the delivery schedule by a day or two. We have no control over parcels once they are mailed from our local Post Office.Overseas mail to some countries (Italy, Russia, France, in particular) has became very slow. We use a VPI machine and thoroughly clean all records. Each order is carefully packaged by removing the LP from the jacket to avoid seam splits, use of 3 ml plastic cover sleeves over each LP and jacket, cardboard pad inserts, and placed in sturdy record mailers for safe delivery. "Eli and The Thirteen Confession" should hailed by all as truly revolutionary and significant as far as the transformation of pop music is concerned. Laura Nyro has always been lauded for her songwriting, but this album never receives enough credit for its ornate sonic fusion of genres and its creative approach to song structure. All adding up to one of the most original sounding albums of 1968. In that year of famous rock albums like 'Electric Ladyland', 'John Wesley Harding' and 'Beggars Banquet', this probably didn't get much critical attention. However, it's an album that is getting more and more acclaim. Lyrically, the album is unrelentingly brave and erudite. At the time, it was not usual or generally acceptable for an artist to come right out with a song like "Emmie", an openly gay love song. Same for "The Confession" a song of explicit sexual desire. Her songwriting prowess at its best is an intimate look into the psyche of a woman, with some songs brewing with spasmodic intensity (Eli's Comin') while others more relaxed and soulful (Stoned Soul Picnic).What a tremendously mature effort by Nyro on what must really be considered her debut as a solo entity, distinct from pretty much anything else you might compare her with at the time. Amazing to think that all of this sophistication happened right smack in the middle of the riotous year of 1968. And although its influence maybe subtle, Eli and the Thirteenth Confession is the something like the musical equivalent of Archimedes' discovery of water density. Laura Nyro was able to blend seamlessly elements of jazz and R&B into popular music with a sensual flowing groove. The subtle influence of this album (and the whole Nyro package), as well as the actual philosophy in the lyrics, was very important for rock music. In 1968, Laura Nyro had gained artistic control of aspects of the production, she could fine tune her albums much in the way that she had already perfected her songwriting craft. And though her songs have been popularized by others, the person who said that the best version of Laura Nyro's songs were recorded by Laura Nyro. One can only assume that it was the type of songs that you find on Eli that made Todd Rundgren "stop writing like The Who and starting writing like Laura Nyro, but its her voice that really sold these numbers. Her delivery leaves no question as to what the melody of the tune was, and though she had an undeniably distinctive, absolutely quirky vocal style, flashiness is never the point. The arrangements are so clever and dynamic, and the pacing (song sequencing) is divine - its easy to see why other artists were so attracted to these songs. Many Nyro fans seem to refer to Eli, Tendaberry and Beads of Sweat as a "trilogy" of masterpieces, because they seems so heavy as albums they almost feel like novels. Eli, in particular, is a timeless, cosmopolitan album with romantic, familial, religious and social themes, the kind of album that has an upbeat backbone of R&B flavored pop tunes (Luckie, Lu, Timer, Stoned Soul Picnic, Farmer Joe) mixed with gospel flavoured rave ups (Sweet Blindness, Eli's Comin') and of course, slower ballads that have melodies that seem to wind around you. Of course there are numerous time changes, sometimes within a single piece, or else a tune like Woman's Blues will start with a quartet of backing arrangements playing a slow ostinato motif which somehow blossoms into a kick ass soul number.
