THE MISSION -- Becoming One -- hard to find, original 1972 (?) U.S. album. Here's another unsung gem on the Avant Garde label -- if this were an obscure Private Press LP instead of an obscure Xian Rock album, it'd be trading hands for a couple hundred bucks ... Musically it's a fascinating grab-bag of late 1960's rock styles (the apparent release date is 1972 but sound-wise this feels about 4-5 years earlier). There's bittersweet Byrds-style Folk-Rock w/ haunting harmony vocals on a couple cuts (Where You Belong, Becoming One) ... a grungy Dylan meets Creedence number (Pie In The Sky) ... all-out Acid Rock w/ throbbing organ and guitars (Temple Turning Time, maybe the album's highlight) ... and even some tasty organ-fueled Garage-Folk Rock (Here's Where I Want To Be). There are a couple more typical Xian Folk numbers thrown in as well, but overall this is a real winner, and still off the radar screen for most late 1960's-early 1970's Rock fans.
