Sundazed Music is proud to present a genuine psychedelic landmark: Live by Moby Grape, the first official collection of concert recordings by the legendary San Francisco band at its blazing late-Sixties peak. At that time, in rock's hippest city, there was not other band like the original Grape: Jerry Miller, Skip Spence, Bob Mosley, Peter Lewis and Don Stevenson. Their Columbia debut LP, Moby Grape, issued in June 1967, is still acclaimed as one of the greatest rock albums ever - a thrilling union of blues, soul, country, surf twang and da-glo garage rock, packed into original killer-pop songwriting. Even as extreme Columbia hype, devastating business hassles and Spence's tragic mental collapse threatened to blow up the band, the Grape continued to make immortal albums, including 1968's Wow and the magnificent Moby Grape '69.

But the records told only half of the tale. Moby Grape, in their prime, were also one of the Bay Area's - and America's - best stage band, like the Beatles and Rolling Stones in one, with a breathtaking triple-guitar attack and stunning vocal harmonies, Live is the long-awaited proof. It features more than an hour of dynamite performances from soundboard and broadcast tapes, including tracks from the Avalon Ballroom in 1967 and the band's complete long-lost set at the Monterey Pop Festival, just a week after Moby Grape came out. There are live versions of the great rare Grape songs 'Rounder" and "Looper" and five tracks from a famous Dutch radio show featuring the hard-charging '69 lineup of Miller, Mosley, Lewis and Stevenson.

And Live climaxes with the historic first-ever release of Spence's acid-guitar masterpiece "Dark Magic" - never recorded in the studio by the original band but presented here in an epic 17-minute performance at the Avalon, on New Year's Eve 1966. Moby Grape were the hottest band in town that night, with the whole rock & roll world ahead of them. And they sound like it.

These four-decade-old recordings have been spectacularly mastered, in you-are-there fidelity, and this album comes with sumptuous packaging and rare photos in true Sundazed style, plus liner notes by Rolling Stone writer and Moby Grape authority David Fricke. 'Live' presents, at last, the untold part of Moby Grape's incredible story. It is San Francisco psychedelia at its zenith and the best historical rock release of the year.

MOBY GRAPE  THE PLACE AND THE TIME DOUBLE LIMITED EDITION LP SET NOW ALSO OUT OF PRINT

 The mastering is just about as good as technology can now do. Some of the tracks are a bit rough, but they are demos and out-takes.

This is a treasure-trove of basically unreleased tracks from early in the group's existence. Saying that, these tracks were included on the albums Sundazed put out a few years ago. Now that the first few albums have been taken out of circulation, (except for the pricey "San Francisco Sound" label) this is what we're left with-and it's pretty darn good. Any Moby Grape fan will like virtually every track here. Some of these are on the Sundazed reissues that are still in circulation, but a number of them were on the titles no longer available. Perhaps this is a way for Sundazed to re-coop some of it's losses when they were forced to quit manufacturing certain titles.

The packaging is nice, giving a synopsis of the band and information on each track (demo, alternate, etc.) which helps place these sides in their proper context. The only omissions are from the album,GRAPE JAM. This is due to time limitations because the three missing tracks (GRAPE JAM #2,GRAPE JAM #9,and BAG'S GROOVE-a jazz composition by Milt Jackson) total a bit over 31 minutes,and wouldn't fit with the other tracks on one disc.

Anyone who missed out on the Sundazed releases of this group would do well to pick this up--presumably it will not be recalled. Listening to these sides will give both the uninitiated (especially) and fan insight into what the band's demos and live recordings were like, if you're not familiar with this group. It's interesting that having all these sides together,in one package, actually makes for a pretty powerful album in it's own right. When they were originally spread through the various albums, some of that power was dissipated. So these tracks can certainly stand alone,which says something about the quality of the writing,arranging, and playing by the band. All members of the band could write, sing, and play. Together, they crossed blues, rock, and country, into something very exciting. This is great music from one of the best bands from the sixties (I was lucky enough to hear them live back then and they were a powerful band-vocally and instrumentally) which anybody who likes great r&r should purchase
