Engineered by a young Frank Zappa in Paul Buff’s Pal Recording Studios (later Zappa’s Studio Z) in Cucamonga, this is an extremely rare 45 rpm single by the first band ever to score a surf instrumental hit on the Billboard charts with “Bustin’ Surfboards”. It also marked the beginning of the end for one of Surf Music’s most promising practitioners when the record company heads changed the name of the band from the original ‘The Tornadoes’ to ‘The Hollywood Tornadoes’ to distinguish them from the English band called ‘The Tornados’.

 

Zappa recorded the tracks on Buff’s now-legendary five-track custom tape machine in the same studio where The Surfaris recorded “Wipe Out” and The Chantays recorded a seminal version of “Pipeline”, yet the single ultimately did more damage than good to the band’s reputation when record buyers didn’t know it was the same band who had released the hit “Bustin’ Surfboards’ (which appears on the soundtrack to the hit film ‘Pulp Fiction’. This single is indispensable for hardcore Surf, Zappa or Buff collectors.

 

The single is in good condition with few light scuffs (the B-side is in very good condition) and both labels are reasonably clean with no tears, only a single numbered sticker on the A-side and a barely visible inked name on the reverse.
