The Moonglows were always among the classiest acts in the field of R&B harmony vocals -- the regular crossover of their own work to the pop charts, and the appeal of their repertory (most notably "Sincerely") into vocal pop in others' hands both speak to that point. It should, thus, come as no surprise that their first (and only official) album places a strong emphasis on elegant harmonizing, often with tasteful string arrangements -- not that there aren't some hot rhythm numbers here, especially "Kiss Me Baby" from early 1956 (and we'd love to know who the guitarist and sax-man were on that song); and "Mean Old Blues," a jaunty, swaggering dance number. But mostly the music here comes from the other end of doo wop music spectrum than, say, the work of the Cadillacs or the Coasters; it's no less valid, and equally alluring, just mostly with more emphasis on harmony than rhythm -- and it is blues, to be sure, even if the rhythm isn't always appropriate for anything other than slow dancing. Ironically, the most mainstream number here, "Cold Feet," comes at the end of the album and almost seems like an after-thought, just to show that this group could do a by-the-numbers rock & roll dance piece, and do it well. Mostly though, lead singers Harvey Fuqua and Bobby Lester delivered the R&B equivalent of a Sinatra album, in terms of sheer seductiveness. "Ten Commandments of Love," which was the hit off the album, will be the most familiar number here, but everything else is of the same quality, itself an amazing feat when one considers that, as with most early Chess Records LPs, the material here wasn't recorded with an album necessarily in mind. Rather, it was assembled from across three full years of singles sessions. And that speaks well for Leonard and Phil Chess who, on "This Is Love," "Don't Say Goodbye" and "I'll Stop Wanting You," pulled out all of the stops (and must have emptied their production budget) with the strings backing up Fuqua, Lester and company. It all holds up amazingly well six decades later, and is a part of the group's legacy that is well worth owning.

What Beatles were for Rock’n’Roll in general, and British Invasion in particular, what Otis Redding was for Soul, what James Brown was for Funk and Bob Dylan for singers/songwriters of any kind, THE MOONGLOWS were for Doo-Wop and vocal group sound of the late 1950’s. If you are only familiar with one of their songs - their classic mega-hit "Blue Velvet" from 1956, you are missing A LOT - and doing this awesome group a great, grave injustice. Wait until you hear THIS!!!  The original Moonglows’ version of this gorgeous ballad wipes the floor with the weepy, saccharine, narcoleptic Bobby Vinton version of some four years later.

(a)          WE GRADE THE VINYL AS EXCELLENT. This is one of those albums that are somewhat difficult to grade. It is somewhere between VG++ and NEAR MINT, just a notch below NEAR MINT. A few light abrasions ARE visible, but they are extremely shallow, superficial  and only moderately visually distracting (nothing significant).For the most part, the vinyl looks impeccable without any MAJOR visual flaws or imperfections. Much of the original luster is intact, and the vinyl shines and sparkles almost like new.

(b)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Mono pressing of this title is much rarer, and by far more  preferable to its FAKE ("electronically rechannelled") stereo counterpart. We estimate that FAKE stereo copies of this album outnumber monos by a ratio of at least 10:1.

(d)          The record has a "deep groove" (an indent in the label about 1/2-inch from the edge of the label, which on SOME labels is associated with very early or first pressings).

(e)           True Stereo copies of this album are NOT known to exist.

(f)            Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

THE COVER IS NICE --- ABOUT EXCELLENT OR VERY GOOD+++.

The following flaws or imperfections are noted on the cover:

-        Cover has a small cutout hole in one of the corners

-         Cover has JUST A HINT of ring wear (nothing significant); On the scale from 1 to 10 (1 being the least, and  10 being the most severe), we assess the severity of ring wear as 1

-         Cover shows JUST A HINT of yellowing on both sides, apparently from aging.   (nothing significant)

-         Cover has one corner slightly dinged (nothing significant)

-        No split seams

-        No cut-out corners

-        No saw-marks or indents

-        No dirt/dust rubbing stains (friction marks caused by rubbing against other covers)
